Wireless broadband is a potential alternative to a conventional cable or DSL broadband connection. It enables you to access broadband either at a fixed point or away from home. Presently, Wireless CDMA , a third generation (3G) mobile technology is the mostly used wireless broadband technology in the UK. This technology enables voice & data transfer at a connection speed of 384kbit/s. HSDPA, another version of W-CDMA can offer connection speed up to 14 Mbits/s but it is in its initial stages.WiFi is another mode of wireless broadband availability in the UK. The so called ‘wi-fi hotspots’ in commercial or public areas like cafes, airports and offices use this technology. Wifi hotspots offer broadband access to people with laptops or mobiles. Recently, cloud, wireless broadband provider and the London city corporation have together launched a mega wi-fi expansion plan which is going to install more than 350000 hotspots in London streets.
WiMax is an alternative to Metropolitan Area Network (MAN) with wider coverage area than Wifi. You can access broadband both from fixed points at home or office as well as using your mobiles.
