Will Pandemic Slow Down Broadband Speeds?
The flu season that is round the corner is feared to spread inconvenience and trouble among the home broadband service dependent people in the United Kingdom. Because of the spreading of flu many tend to work from their home, which makes the UK broadband network struggle to maintain the demand for bandwidth.
A combined research by the Center of Disease Control and analysts Gartner has predicted that forty per cent of the worker-base might find it hard to carry out their assignments for an extended time period. This says that even if the workers go through their works from their homes the local broadband networks could find it a bit too much to cope with the sudden broadband demand surge.
At present, in the United Kingdom many use their net in the day time for commercial purpose – thanks to the work-at-home concept – when broadband traffic is found to be at at the lowest. On the other hand, with the outbreak of another swine flu bout one could be getting to see a significant number of students also working from home. This in its turn would create heavy traffic and the resultant service slow down.
According to Gartner, there was glimmer of hope as this problem can be considerably mitigated by increasing the WiMAX, 3G or satellite connections. It is also worth mentioning here that a special software set to help the latency and bandwidth issues was being distributed by the employers to tackle the shortcomings due to the pandemic.
It is also interesting to listen to the research vice president at Gartner, Roberta Witty’s comments about this episode that the organizations should set up a variety of schemes for WAH such as WAH and pandemic impact planning negotiating with broadband internet service providers. This according to the expert should be decided in advance and the operations needed heavy internet usage as well as hours of toiling to boost the chance of expanding the bandwidth.
