VoIP - An introduction to Internet Telephony

Although it's been possible to make phone calls through the internet since 1973, most of the world is just now obtaining the technology to enable them to use these services. Talking over the internet is commonly known as Voice over Internet Protocol, or VoIP. First developed by the US Department of Defence, VoIP requires a broadband connection. Most people haven't been using this technology because broadband connections were not widely available, or were too expensive. Now that broadband is more accessible, VoIP is a great alternative to land line phones. Differences Much of VoIP operates the same way as land line phones; however some parts of it operate differently. Most notably is the way emergency calls such as 999 are processed. Depending on your provider, emergency calls may be handled differently or the service may not be offered at all. Be sure to check how these calls will be handled before deciding on a particular provider. Many broadband providers also offer VoIP packages and sometimes you can get discounts if you order them with your broadband package. VoIP calls are usually less expensive than land line phone calls and international rates are usually very good. Quality Most times there is no difference in the quality between a land line and VoIP phone calls. The quality is mostly dependent on your connection speed, however even the slowest of all broadband packages can usually handle VoIP phone calls. What you need Depending on your internet provider you may need to install software or another router. VoIP phones are easily purchased which can be placed around your home. Check with your provider to see what type of phone is compatible with their service. You may also want to check with your provider to see if they have any discounts on equipment. Many times ISPs get discounts on equipment from the manufacturers to pass along to consumers!
