UK ISPs not obliged to pass on Anti-piracy Costs

British-Phonographic-IndustryA music industry leader has put forth its claim that the internet service providers operating in the United Kingdom were not obliged to pass on the tackling cost of illegal online downloading to their subscribers.

This development is highly interesting for one main reason that it definitely defends the claim previously made by one of the leading broadband homephone bundle providers in the United Kingdom, TalkTalk that anti-filesharing measures would be the copyright crackdown paid for by all the broadband internet consumers in the country.

The music industry leader that has come forward with the fresh claims supporting the bill is British Phonography Industry. According to the firm, efforts taken to tackle illegal downloading of copyright content would not necessarily fall on broadband internet customers as higher costs.

Geoff Taylor, the chief executive officer of the music industry firm who has made the comments against the claims of TalkTalk, on behalf of BPI, explained in the firm’s blog that there existed no obligation for the broadband providers to pass on the cost to their subscribers, besides claiming that the firms opposing the bill were guilty of fabricating scare stories about it.

Taylor further outlined that they were always at liberty to extract the costs out of their tremendous profits or to pass on the notification costs to the holders of the accounts that are used for illegal activities. He also said that with a view to persuade the customers that illegal filesharing was not worth tackling, the ISPs have been giving fanciful figures.
