UK is the seventh largest broadband country
The latest report on the number of broadband connections worldwide from Point Topic’s Global Broadband Statistics service indicates that UK occupies the 7the place in the table of top ten countries in terms of broadband subscribers. By the end of March, 2007, the total number of broadband connections in UK is close to 14 million mark, an increase of 850,000 broadband connections during the last quarter. This growth is not so remarkable if you compare it with other countries that figure in the table.
The USA still ranks first by adding nearly 3 million new subscribers thus making the total number of broadband subscribers to cross over 60 million mark. China takes 2nd spot in the table, but the new subscribers in china has outnumbered the USA during the last quarter. South Korea, another a major broadband country from Asia Pacific region occupies 6th place, one place down compared to previous quarter.
Out of the top ten countries that figure in the table, only seven countries manage to cross 10 million subscribers and only countries like USA, China and Japan have broadband subscribers over 20 million.
In Europe, the countries that are included in the table are Germany, France, UK, Italy, Spain. Among all countries, France has witnessed the highest growth in broadband take up during the last quarter at a rate of 9.36% that pushed South Korea one place down to make it occupy 5th place in the table. While it is a good news that the top ten list contains five countries from Europe, it is also found that most of the countries in Europe has been making rather sluggish progress in broadband with some exceptions like Romania and Greece which had made remarkable growth in broadband take up.
The report further says that there are more than 300 million broadband subscribers across the globe.
Katja Mueller, Research Director at Point Topic commented:
“Given the prevailing growth rates it is safe to assume that the number has now passed 300 million.”
