Types of Wireless Networks

Following types of wireless network are being used these days with great efficiency. They are

  • Wireless Local Area Networks (LANs)or wireless Ethernet
    • 802.11b
    • 802.11g
  • Fixed Broadband Wireless WAN (Wide Area Network)
    • MMDS and LMDS
    • Small Dish Satellite
  • Mobile Wireless for VoIP and Internet
  • Wireless Personal Area Networks for Bluetooth™ technologies

Wireless LAN's: Many home and offices have got wireless these days and many others are in process of implementing this solution for their enterprises. All you need to do is to purchase a Wireless Network card for each of your workstation which would cost around £50. This price is more or less similar of wiring a cubical of around 8 computers. Wireless reduces the amount of cable usage to absolutely upto computer terminal power cables only and nothing other than that. As compared to data transfer rate between wired and wireless, it ranges fro 10-100 Mbps on a wired LAN and upto 11 Mbps on 802.11b and upto 54 Mbps on a 802.11g WLAN which is more or less very good speed. The greatest advantage with wireless is its mobility. You can take your laptop computer and move around the campus or home garden and will still be connected as long as you are in range of the wireless access point. Now every wireless Network card will be connecting with an access point which would cost another £50-£450 depending upon there capabilities and functionalities. These access points are in-turn wired to the network switch or hub to be accessed by entire network.

Fixed Wireless WANs: wireless is quickly changing the way DSL, cable and optical fibre functions by taking over there place. Most offices now have fixed wireless WAN connection between there offices and are no longer considering the expensive and delicate optical fibre's or point to point laser or even microwave for this type of long distance connectivity. The newer technologies are point to multipoint and preferred over any other.

The small dish satellite: even the cable operators or TV operator have started offering internet service and many of them provide a download speed of about 1 Mbps and upload speed better than a 128 kbps broadband connection. This is great new invention and your keyboard and mouse are fixed to your TV.

Mobile Wireless: This is another form of wireless connection which will keep the user connected to either internet or the corporate intranet all the time. Mobiles phones or PDA's are the best example of mobile wireless. The devices are constantly connected to service provider as well as the company intranet and can receive information from both. The only problem is the data transfer rate is very slow.

Personal Area Networks: Here we are talking about very small network which can run over a 2.4GHz frequency in an unlicensed mode because of low power radio transmission. This is Bluetooth, which is available in most mobiles phones, computers and other digital devices which can be linked within 30 feet's and a transmission speed is about 1Mbps with one hundred percent data reliability.
