It has been reported that the visitors at the venues of Macdonald Hotels and Resorts, across the United Kingdom will be availed access to high-speed broadband internet service. The impetus force behind this development is the new agreement signed by the hotel chain with BT Openzone.

According to the reports, the public areas of the hotel as well as its bedrooms will be provided with access to wireless broadband internet service (Wi-Fi) by the end of the year 2009. This would be a refreshing as well as welcome change for the broadband consumers and customers of BT and Openzone, and the users of O2 Apple iPhone smartphone to surf the web, email and make VoIP calls.

It is also understood that besides these customer groups, the customers from Boingo, iPass and a range of various partners of Openzone would also be allowed to access the wireless broadband services.

According to BT Openzone’s general manager, Chris Bruce, a large number of people expected to enjoy wireless broadband access at selected venues such as Macdonald Hotels and Resorts, whether through smartphones, laptops or other devices, and the company was delighted to welcome to its network, their guests.

Vouchers of BT Openzone will also be sold by Macdonald hotels. This development enables their guests to subscribe to the wireless broadband service for the full duration of their stay at the hotels. Currently, BT has more than 650,00 hotspots across Ireland and the United Kingdom.

According to the plans of the Starbucks coffee chain, those who have already signed up for its Cards Rewards scheme shall be entitled to access the Wi-Fi broadband services of UK broadband provider BT, BT Openzone at more than six hundred fifty coffee shops across the United Kingdom and Ireland.

The business and home customers of the fixed-line broadband giant of the United Kingdom, BT are already availed of WiFi access at hotspots including Starbuck coffee stores as part of their deal with the ISP, provided they had with them, inclusive WiFi minutes.

BT Openzone’s chief executive officer, Chris Bruce said on the coffeeshop chain’s new schemes that Starbucks was providing access to more customers to a remarkable place to catch up over the mail or simply work online. He added that the deal married best quality coffee with an excellent in-store network of Wi-Fi.

It is also worth mentioning here that BT Openzone had only revealed last month that its fast wireless broadband public hotspots were then available at 500,000 spots throughout the United Kingdom and Ireland.

As the United Kingdom is looking all set to welcome the broadband revolution, more and more towns, communities, businesses, outlets and even public places such as airport launches and trains are aspiring to get into the thick of things by stepping on to the wonderworld realised by wireless broadband technology.

Recently, it was the turn of the people living in Norwich welcome the proposal of a fresh internet project according to reports. A fresh WiFi project that can run across the city centre has been proposed by a firm known as Babcock International. This WiFi broadband internet project is expected to start yielding from April 2010, according to a Norwich Evening News report.

The company that has come forward with the proposal could be meeting the business leaders shortly to discuss the WiFi project that could open the floodgates of opportunities for individuals and businesses. It is understood that the company was focusing on key centres in the city such as the UEA (University of East Anglia) campus.

The newspaper had also published the view of the partnership manager at Norwich City Centre, Stefan Gurney that anything that potentially promoted the city for tourism had to be good, and if there was potential to rollout a WiFi network for City College, UEA and the city centre, those were the three spots that could experience high usage.

Meanwhile in Scotland, the public transport is expecting a WiFi broadband access installation in the near future. Under fresh plans here, buses and trains serving the country would be installed with free wireless broadband access with a view to attract more people onto public transport. It is also expected that such a condition would reduce the carbon footprint of the nation.

According to a Scottish government spokesman, Transport Scotland sponsored by the government was already musing over the development of a business case for WiFi provision on ScotRail services, e3ven though the WiFi provision on Scottish buses was solely a matter for private bus operators.

Latest reports reveal that the readily availability and the cost friendliness of the Wi-Fi (wireless internet technology) connectivity are virtually transforming the home broadband internet market in the United Kingdom.

According to Techworld, the renowned IT specialist, the convenience offered by the Wi-Fi technology that allowed the users of laptops and netbooks to browse the internet on the move or at home, was considerably boosting the broadband market.

The editor of the website, John Dunn explained that although the Wi-Fi broadband concept had taken its time for the initial take off, it has now very much reached the critical mass. He added that Wi-Fi as a matter of fact, had got off the ground about five years back with prices plummetting and speeds improving, despite going nowhere for a number of years.

Dunn claims that the concept of Wi-Fi was a winner owing to its values such as inexpensiveness and advancement, apart from being used by the personal computers worldwide, which might be the reason for its transforming the home networking market.

Dunn also cited another reason for the technology’s success that it could be a viable alternative for the more expensive mobile broadband technology, particularly for connecting mobile devices and laptops to the internet at a time when 3G mobile broadband speeds were a limiting agent on performance.

Dunn had given his comments in the wake of the report published by ABI Research that in 2011, 1 Billion Wi-Fi chipsets would be shipped all over the world. According to the editor of the website that specilaises in reviewing products, a boost in the number of portable gadgets in the world would provide the users with the opportunity of taking advantage of the future Wi-Fi.

Six of the UK lounges of Flybe Airlines would be allowing its customers who used laptop while taking a flight, wireless broadband access materialised by BT Openzone. Traveller-internet users can enjoy the new facility this summer onwards. This would obviously enable holidaymakers to browse internet through Wi-Fi, while they wait with the carrier, for their flights from Birmingham, Belfast, Edinburgh, Gatwick, Glasgow and Exeter.

4.8 million customers of UK ISP, BT Broadband can enjoy free wireless internet access with inclusive minutes for Wi-Fi usage. The free service can also be enjoyed by BT Openzone customers and certain customers of O2 Mobile Broadband. The fresh service will be rolled out initially at half of the total lounges of Flybe. Travellers using the service of other broadband providers as well, can gain access to the new service by buying a Wi-Fi usage voucher of BT Openzone.

BT Openzone had also opened a new Wi-Fi hotspot in the Heathrow’s Terminal 4 building, in June. That then had been in the Sky Team launch of the airport building. Chris Bruce, BT Openzone’s General Manager noted that holiday makers were armed with wireless devices, as business travellers wanted to be productive even while waiting for their flights. He also claimed that they were providing an increased number of Wi-Fi spots, where travellers wanted them most, with their UK access spots as well as overseas hotspots, allowing the flyers to keep in touch on the move.
