Under a fresh legislation that came into force on the first of July, the telecommunications firms in Finland are obliged to deliver broadband internet service of at least 1 Mbps connection speed to all its citizens.

Another remarkable promise made by the government of Finland to the entire population of the country is that every one of they would be entitled to receive super fast broadband connections of 100Mbps access speeds by the year 2015.

It is worth mentioning here that Finland has already been one of the most connected states in the world, while the broadband internet coverage in the United Kingdom still sat at a not so impressing 73 per cent.

Suvi Linden, the communications minister of Finland said that the fact that broadband internet was no more a privilege, instead was a part of the day-to-day life across the society strata has reflected in the legislation.

It has been reported that some of the rural broadband notspots in Wales would be enjoying reasonably fast broadband connections in the recent future, through a support scheme that is worth GBP 2 million.

According to reports, when the new refreshing project gets triggered off during this summer, a maximum fund of GBP 1000 would be made available for every individual application.

The much stigmatised broadband notspot term refers to the distance of the resident broadband consumers’ location from their nearest telephone exchange. Incidentally, the shortage of broadband internet access in the rural areas of Britain has invited heavy criticism in recent years.

Intriguingly, Mid Wales Partnership, a regeneration group had warned in 2007 that black holes in the broadband network of rural Wales were placing it in peril of lagging behind the rest of the United Kingdom.

Besides, the regeneration group had also called for a urgent investment and planning to enhance high speed broadband internet connection in the country.

Ieuan Wyn Jones, the deputy first minister for Wales that launched the fresh project in Blaenplwyf a Welsh village in the vicinity of Aberystwyth had explained the working mode of the scheme.

According to the website such a situation pointed to a sorry state of affairs, which required to be addressed seriously. The website further thinks that in such a juncture, the country should be better advised to follow suit the actions taken by the US government in the context.

As a matter of fact, the president of the US Barack Obama has announced a scheme that was all about the investment in sixty-six projects across the nation with a view to boost broadband connections to the consumers in the financially backward as well as the rural regions.

For this project that could help not only create around five thousand jobs but also generate a sum of GBP 200 million in investment made by private players, the US government has thrown a princly amount of $ 795 million.

The White House that reiterated great benefits the scheme could bring to the citizens across the US, also noted that more than 685,000 businesses, 2400 educational institutions and 900 healthcare bodies besides tens of millions of US citizens stood to benefit from the awards.

As a potential strike by the employees of the prominent fixed-line broadband internet service provider operating in the United Kingdom, BT looms above the broadband sector of the country, there are potential concerns if it leaving the faults on broadband and telephone lines remaining unfixed.

Incidentally, the workers body that is calling for the strike, the CWU (communication workers union) has last day started distributing papers to the staff of BT pressing them to vote over the walk-out. The main lament of the union is that BT was sporting double standards regarding pay.

The union cited the leading internet service provider’s offering the staff a 2 per cent pay hike with a bonus of GBP 250 besides the potential for another GBP 250 and then failing to meet it as the immediate cause for the strike.

However, the chief executive officer of the broadband provider, Ian Livingstone under whose leadership the firm had made over GBP 1 million in profits in the previous year, interestingly received a pay increase by GBP 850,000, besides a GBP 1.2 million bonus.

Meanwhile, the deputy general secretary of the workers’ body, Andy Kerr said that they were seeking a reasonable as well as affordable pay hike for their members in BT that have heavily contributed to the company’s success during a couple of difficult years.

On the other hand, BT that expressed its disappointment over the active circulation of the ballot for strike action, claimed that despite the fact that it has upgraded its offer severally, the union have seldom moved once from their initial claim.

As a matter of fact, the Yorkshire Post has reported the formation of a partnership plan with a view to convert the East Yorkshire port into a digital city, based on a scheme introduced within the schools of the locality.

The head of economic regeneration and development at Hull Council, Mark Jones said that a prgramming was being developed to boost community access to super-fast broadband internet.

Jones commented that there was widespread recognition that Hull city could not be left behind as the rest of the United Kingdom was being swept by the digital revolution.

Jones added that there was a consensus in the city on the fact that the digital infrastructure that supported connectivity and the connectivity together formed a key issue that required to be addressed.

Earlier in June 2010, Brendan O’Neill, editor at Spiked Online had said to the Guardian that the broadband infrastructure of the United Kingdom was failing to cope with the rapidly growing virtual society.
