The study was carried out by the Digital Agenda of the European Union.

The study has revealed that businesses in the United Kingdom were unable to comprehensively exploit the e-services introduced by the government.

The Digital Agenda scoreboard’s latest statistics revealed that the businesses in the United Kingdom, taking advantage of the e-services of the British government were 35 per cent less than the average e-commerce businesses of Europe.

The Digital Agenda scoreboard also showed that the companies in the United Kingdom were trailing their counterparts in the rest of the member states of the European Union in the consumption of e-business methods.

As a matter of fact, the businesses in the United Kingdom have fallen short of the European Union average significantly in engaging CRM analytical software and implementing management systems for electronic supply chains.

The data analysis of the European countries’ progress since the launch of the European Digital Agenda in 2010, it has been found that 64 per cent of the businesses in the United Kingdom have fallen below the European Union average, while internal processes were integrated and 81 per cent have fallen while exchanging business documents automatically.

As the government of the United Kingdom is set to announce the funding available to various local authorities by next month, the West Sussex County Council would be receiving money to boost broadband internet services in the upcoming weeks. This has been confirmed by the government.

Although the local authority had missed out in the previous round of handouts by the Broadband Delivery UK (BDUK), the July promise by the government seems to have done a world of good for the morale of the residents and businesses of the county.

According to last month’s announcement made by the Conservative-Liberal Democrat coalition government, a combined GBP 50 million were to go to the authorities of Wiltshire, Norfolk, and Devon and Somerset.

At the time of last month’s funding announcement, the DCMS (Department for Culture, Media and Sport) had revealed its receiving a total of eighteen bids for cash. The Culture department had then expressed its confidence in giving support for all during the current parliament itself.

In spite of being excluded from the most recent funding round, all the eighteen councils that had sent a bid for cash, including West Sussex would be allocated their public funding share by 2011 July. It was so explained by Jeremy Hunt, the Culture minister.

The decision is expected to result in the communities no longer having to battle it out among themselves for being chosen as sites for carrying out superfast unlimited broadband internet trials.

This information has been gained from the fresh figures revealed by the European Union.

The statistics published as part of the digital agenda of the European Commission, showed that the United Kingdom has per hundred people, 36.1 fixed-line broadband connections, which was five more than the average recorded across the European Union’s twenty seven member states.

The study carried out by the European Commission also pointed to the fact that 99.3 per cent of the lansline broadband internet services of the United Kingdom offered internet access speeds of at least 2Mbps, compared to the figure recorded across of the European Union that showed 86.7 per cent.

The number of landline broadband connections in the United Kingdom with access speeds of more than or equal to 10 Mbps have, between 2007 and 2010 risen to 44.8 per cent from zero. Over the same term, the average of the European Union increased to 38.9 per cent from 8.8 per cent.

It is noteworthy that almost two thirds of the people in the United Kingdom are frequent broadband consumers, while across the continent, just about half of users went online daily or about that often.

The telecommunications regulator of the United Kingdom, Ofcom has forced the telecommunications service providers operating in the country to stick to service packages of 12-month long contracts, besides enforcing the emergency SMS service.

The fresh set of rules implemented by Ofcom with a view to bring those in line with the new telecommunications law of European Union means that the broadband and mobile/home phone providers of the United Kingdom will need to limit thaeir service offerings to a maximum contract duration of 24 months.

Also given by the fresh rules adopted by the watchdog last week is the implication that businesses and consumers must be provided with the choice of opting for a 12-month deal in a bid to safeguarding competition by allowing customers to switch suppliers more easily.

It now remains to see if the regulator will be forcing all of the mobile network operators of the Unted Kingdom as well for ensuring that all handsets on offer can be purchased with a 12-month service package. Incidentally, these operators already offer contracts ranging from twelve to twenty four months depending on the handset and the nature of the bundled data, texts and minutes.

It is quiet refreshing to hear Ed Richards, the chief executive officer at Ofcom say that these alterations to the laws should make it convenient for the users to take advantage of a broader range of competition in the telecommunications market of the United Kingdom.

The new regulations also calls for the mobile operators to make permanently available to the customers, the emergency Short Message Service (SMS) system. This a scheme that enables the users to text 999 instead of making a phone call.
