A fair bit of uproar among the consumer circles has been caused by the recent announcement made by one of the popular broadband and home phone providers operating in the United Kingdom, TalkTalk that the landline to mobile phone prices floated by it undercut those of BT.

To be preciser, the commercial head of TalkTalk, Tristia Clarke said that the internet service provider offered cheaper landline to mobile prices, in spite of forthcoming price-slashes by BT. Besides, the broadband provider has also hit out at the demand of BT for rival companies to cut the amount they charged for landline to mobile phone calls.

A reduction by 24 per cent on the home phone to mobile phone call rates of BT during off-peak hours has been announced by BT, which would be coming into effect from 28 May 2011. The day-time call prices are also set to drop by 13 per cent.

According to BT, the fresh move tend to add additional pressure on the likes of Virgin Media, TalkTalk and Sky to pass on the savings acquired after the success of the campaign, ‘Terminate the Rate’.

Nevertheless, Clarke has claimed that her firm had no need to pick up the gauntlet, since the prices fixed by it were already considerably cheaper than those offered by BT, besides having been there for some time. According to her, the landline packages of TalkTalk, even after the reduction fixed by BT, could still be offering better value.

A number of booster products, which provided lanline phone to mobile phone calls for as low as ip a minute was there in place among the deals of TalkTalk, the former subsidiary of Carphone Warehouse.

While a great number of broadband internet-savvy people in the United Kingdom were longing to keep at bay the worries of paying for a landline service they did never use, millions of consumers in the country have found a phone line as their sole practical way for accessing the internet.

While a great number of consumers in the United Kingdom finds that the landline was still playing a prominent role in their household utilities, the country narrowly ducked under a landline tax proposal this year, owing to a change in the government. However, it seems the prices are on the rise yet again.

Meanwhile, both TalkTalk and BT have raised their line rental fee this month, besides making the day-time calls more expensive. The costs for connecting calls have also been raised by BT, Virgin Media and TalkTalk. Nonetheless, the customers opting for bundle deals and special packages can often get these costs waived.

The call connection cost outside of a bundle deal for the customers of BT has risen to 10.9p and for those on the network of Virgin Media it is 11.99p. However, reductions in their overall landline charges are offered by both the companies providing the customers also subscribe to their other services such as their television or broadband offers.

Another way in front of the customers to save money is by avoiding the prominent service providers altogether and resorting to comparison websites to check out other providers’ deals. It is possible today as there are numerous companies that provide broadband servicesin the country.

It has been reported that the advertising regulator of the United Kingdom, Advertising Standards Authority, better known as ASA, has upheld a complaint forwarded by broadband provider Sky against an allegedly misleading advert by TalkTalk.

The concerned advertisement made by TalkTalk, one of the leading providers of broadband and home phone bundles in the United Kingdom, has been reportedly banned by the advertising watchdog from airing in the United Kingdom.

The penalised advertisement was seen claiming that users could cut their broadband internet bills to a nominal GBP 6.49 a month. The voice-over the advert did not clarify the fact that separate charges would be taxed for calls made between morning 6 and evening 6, although some clarifications were made by the on-screen text.

On the other hand, TalkTalk forwarded the argument that the advertisement seldom tend to mislead as it affirmed that only the inclusive elements came under the fixed-price while the the non-inclusive elements were to be billed separately.

However, it was stated by the advertising regulator of the country that they considered that the viewers of the ad were likely to predominantly interpret the reference in the ad’s voice-over to ‘your bill’ as a cut in their overall broadband-phone bill rather than simply the inclusive call price.
