Households and businesses in many areas of Teesdale and Weardale do not get reliable broadband connection as the quality of ADSL broadband in these areas is often affected by the factors like line quality and the distance from exchange. To get better speeds, broadband users in these areas have to be near to the exchanges and also have to upgrade the telephone lines that bring broadband to their premises.

Recently, Teesdale Parish Forum held a meeting to find out a solution to this problem. It seems a multi-million pound programme to launch high-speed wireless broadband in the Teesdale and Weardale areas is being considered by Aladin Enterprises, which has been researching a solution to broadband in the area.

The project is subject to funding, however, Alastair Dinwiddie of Aladin Enterprises was hopeful to get investment to the town over the next 20 years. He further commented:

“Broadband is going to be critical in the future, not just for businesses, but also for residents.

“It’s something people are going to grow up with, so it is essential that people in the area will be able to access it.

“It’s also important that we get the best possible broadband, especially if people are going to be doing things such as watching movies and sending big files over the internet.”

Durham Net, after getting the grant from regional development agency One NorthEast, will setup the wireless system, according to Northern Echo Website. The wireless broadband service which can be completed in 15 months will deliver up to 50 Mbps speed in these areas for a monthly cost ranging £20 to £30.
