In an otherwise disheartening quarterly report for one of the prominent five mobile broadband services provider operating in the United Kingdom, Orange, mobile broadband has been found providing the UK ISP with the only high note.

Meanwhile, the desertion by a considerable number of ADSL broadband customers of the internet service provider over the last couple of months has been annoying the company significantly.

As a matter of fact, the UK broadband provider witnessed its number of fixed-line broadband customers nose-dive by 12.2 per cent in its earning report for the third quarter. This brings the total fixed-line customer base of the company at present to 899,000. The same was 1023 million only a year back.

Overall revenues of the internet service provider also plunged by 15.3 per cent with the revenue from mobile going down by 6.8 per cent and a graver 12.7 per cent fall experienced in the ADSL broadband segment.

However, the mobile broadband subscriptions gave the UK ISP the breather it needed so badly. The mobile broadband subscriptions struck a rising note to 16,110 customers, which amount to an increase by 1.9 per cent.

The hostile economic climate prevailing in the United Kingdom has hit hard the Orange Broadband ISP as well as it did to its rival broadband providers in the country. The main reason cited by the company as its downfall reason is the unfavourable exchange rates.

Project Kangaroo is the title given to a platform pertaining to video on demand that offers content from 4oD of Channel 4, ITV.com and BBC Worldwide, BBC’s commercial arm. This video on demand platform was expected to launch in 2008 initially, although was blocked in 2009 by the Competition Commission. Kangaroo, unlike BBC’s iPlayer would have permitted the customers to buy content from a large back menu. Besides, linking it to BBC’s iPlayer content would have offered the three key broadcasters in the UK, a single broadband VOD service.

The current hot news is that broadband provider of the UK, Orange UK ISP was considering to acquire the Project Kangaroo technology that would entitle the ISP to offer a blend of video streaming and internet television to the users across Britain. This move from the part of Orange UK is all the more significant in the current circumstance that witnesses a defunct joint venture. Orange has revealed that although the de-facto initial investment in the project was something around GBP20 million, it would be acquiring the technology for a much reduced price.

Orange, which has its parent company in French based France Telecom, however stated that no big decision has been taken officially at this stage, though the company was closely monitoring the present situation. From its limited comments, one thing that was apparent was its increased enthusiasm in developing TV projects in France with the help of the kangaroo project. Nonetheless, equally significant was their comment stating that they were extra-cautious when speaking about their future plans in the UK.

In the recent future, Orange UK could be offering you a mobile contract of two years wrapped enticingly in an Apple MacBook Laptop icing. If reports can be taken into account, the Apple laptops that highlight the package would come highly subsidized. This deal, if materialized will see for the first time in the UK, the notebooks of Apple being offered in this way.

This mobile broadband – laptop package from Orange is expected to hit the UK broadband market at some point of the summer, largely owing to Orange’s approach of volume commitment. The Apple MacBook laptops that form the part of the package is expected to come with USB modems, in the conspicuous absence of integrated 3G broadband.

This news, however has not been elevated yet from the levels of being called a rumour, although final talks are believed to be nearing completion. It is also widely perceived that in case this deal is realized successfully, the chances of Apple to join in the distribution contract for future notebooks that would come with built-in mobile broadband.

As for now at least, you definitely are kept away from the luxury of knowing its prices, although it is obvious that the laptops would not be coming for free. The pricing would much depend on the monthly tariff. However, many are of the view that any thing around GBP 400 to GBP 500 can be considered reasonable.
