The broadband internetsavvy people in the UK find it unfortunate that the ongoing pilot of fibre optic broadband technology by BT in North London has been forced to apply skids. This was due to the protests of the local residents of Muswell Hill citing that the fresh roadside cabinets of BT was too large and ugly.

Following the disquiet, Haringey Council blocked the internet service provider from any further installation of the equipment on the Muswell Hill streets. It is also understood that the council strictly wants BT to reconsider its new 1.8 metre-tall cabinet network.

As a matter of fact, Muswell Hill holds the credit for being the first urban area in the UK, where BT is committed to replace its copper lines that connect the roadside fibre optic cabinets to its exchanges. This comes in line with BT’s GBP1.5 billion copper replacement scheme.

According to BT, most of its trial equipments were successfully installed and all set to run providing the customers up to 40Mbps downstream broadband speeds, before it had run into opposition from the residents.

The residents’ stance was explained by a Haringey Council spokesman, Mike Snowdon that they were already troubled by BT with its older roadside cabinets that were significantly tall and not removed to clear the way, and the new equipment was not only taller but also bulkier than the older ones.

Snowdon added that these cabinets had invited people’s complaints such as causing problems for wheelchair and buggies users, apart from being an eyesore. Meanwhile BT explained their part that the fresh cabinets needed to be bigger for requiring to house powered electronics.

According to the ISP, the powered electronics were significant as they converted the fibre optics transmitted light signals to electric signals in order to comply with the copper lines. However, the ISP maintained that its current full copper link network that linked homes to cabinets and to local exchanges needed no such conversion of power.

Ofcom has revealed in its latest report on the communications market that around three million households in the United Kingdom had a mobile broadband connection currently. The telecoms watchdog of the country said that in May alone, more than 250,000 mobile broadband modems (dongles) were sold. This marks a clear increase from the 139,000 dongles sold in May 2009. The report that highlights the information pertaining to the end of the year’s first quarter also stated that the total homes using mobile broadband currently averaged to around 12 percent.

At the same time, the report of the communications watcdog also observes that three quarter of the homes also had a broadband connection of the fixed line kind, which according to it meant that the mobile broadband connections were maintained as a complement to their fixed line connections by the homes, rather than as replacements for them. On the other hand, Ofcom also opined that this can be taken as a result of the constraints imposed on them by the capacity and speed of mobile broadband. The view of the adjudicator suggests that the home users might be considering mobile broadband predominantly for its mobility factor.

As a matter of fact, mobile broadband services of the day, with their low speeds and capacity might end up a spoilsport for the home users who are more inclined to the use of advanced applications such as the iPlayer of BBC that is a data hungry service. Nevertheless, the report’s finding that mobile broadband – by scoring just 83 percent – accounted for the lowest rating of customer satisfaction of all the communications services surveyed by Ofcom, obviously falls as a black mark on the segment.

Finally, Ofcom has also noted that for the first time in May, the mobile broadband contracts were outsold by pay as you go connections. This trend according to the regulator, indicated the expansion of the service into both the wallet conscious who were unable or unwilling to give in to a monthly commitment, and users of lower frequency that wanted the service for emergency or occasional use.

BT has today launched a fresh broadband deal that can be called the reincarnation of its popular “free broadband usage of three months” offer. According to this new BT broadband offer that is more a relaunch of its popular deal, all customers signing up to it before September 4 were availed the three months free usage.

BT is applying this offer to all of its packages, except the Home and Away package. The offer can also be opted for, as part of certain broadband bundle deals of BT. The broadband supplier has also designed the new offer subject to an eighteen month contract. Currently, three home broadband packages are offered by BT, highlighting speeds of up to 8Mbps and different download allowances.

Of the three home broadband packages, Option 3 is the costliest being priced at GBP 18.59 per month for the first three months. Thereafter, the customers on this plan are needed to pay GBP 24.46. Option 2 is a more economic plan that comes with a price tag of GBP 13.69 a month for the first 3 months, followed by GBP 20.54 a month. This plan offers a download allowance of 20GB per month.

Meanwhile, Option 1 being the most economic plan comes priced (for the first three months) at GBP 7.78 a month. Thereafter, the user has to pay a regular monthly rental of GBP 15.65. The advantage here is the availability of a free download of 10GB. According to BT sources, if there was enough demand to press the ISP to extend its network coverage to more than 55 percent of Britain, it would result in the coverage of around 10 million homes initially.

UK internet service provider 3 UK has disclosed its plans to introduce a fresh mobile broadband service by the end of 2009. The company has announced that the fresh service that is all about a mobile Wi-Fi device, which they call MiFi will be a WiFi router designed to provide the 3G mobile broadband service of a service provider over a Wi-Fi link. It is also understood that the new device will be battery powered.

The Mi-Fi modem is a small device that easily gets connected to a number of devices. It does not require a fixed line, embarrassing wires or even a USB connection for the simple reason that the new contraption of 3 can let out signals. Besides all these, Mi-Fi also boasts of a convenient setting up, where no installation software is needed.

According to the company, any Wi-Fi enabled device can automatically receive the signal emitted by the switched on router that uses a WiFi signal to get connected to the mobile internet. The user will have to type in the network key of eight digits, which will be requested by every new host device for once.

The manufacturers expect this device to turn out to be a potential replacement for the conventional USB modems that only get plugged into one computer at a time. They also believe that the Mi-Fi device would boost mobile broadband reception around the office or home, since it can connect to multiple PCs or netbooks wirelessly at a time.
