According to reports, the co-founder of Lastminute.com has been exhorting partner firms to engage themselves with a fresh campaign lead by her dubbed Race Online 2012. This campaign has been launched with a view to provide access to the UK broadband population within a couple of years.

However, Lane Fox was informed a couple of weeks back that plans for digital public service body tasked with enticing more public services to the internet she was supposed to head was being shelved. Nonetheless, it is understood that her role as the digital inclusion champion is safe.

Meanwhile, a spokesperson of the cabinet office said on the development that the cbinet office was still quite actively leading the operations within the government with an aim to drive ahead more efficient government internet services, digital engagement and transparency, backing Martha Lane Fox in her role as the digital inclusion champion of the UK.

As a matter of fact, Race Online has been supported by GBP 1.5 million of government funding; however, Lane Fox looks ahead to harnessing of the potentials of partner organisations to find a solution for the issue. When observed more closely it was found that due to the advent of 3G broadband a good number of small firms have taken to mobile broadband as well.

The digital inclusion champion of the government of United Kingdom, Martha Lane Fox has suggested in a recent report commissioned by her that millions of people in the United Kingdom never used the broadband internet.

This, as a matter of fact, falls as great concern to the digital dreams of the country, as terms such as broadband, internet and online have evolved into routine language for many. This is also a time when people are found relying on internet service more and more for both pleasure and business.

In the report commissioned by her, Fox suggested that more than 10 million adult people in the United Kingdom had never been to internet service; a fact that would shock the millions that banked on broadband internet service for work and pleasure. Another disappointing fact that these figures reveal is that 17 per cent of the UK adults never got online.

The report commissioned by the digital inclusion champion also stressed how many of the internet-phobic were losing out each year, on hundreds of pounds that could be otherwise earned due to the numerous deals that are found online with a wide array of services and products.

Fox’s report also highlights how convenient it was to shop around on the internet and how cheaper it was to pay bill, which culminates into a further savings loss for those reluctant to the internet service.

The new digital inclusion champion of the United Kingdom, Martha Lane Fox has opined that one cannot be a proper UK citizen in the future society, if the person refuses to go online. Fox said this while talking to BBC Radio 4.

Fox’s perspective holds significance as the number of refuseniks in the country amount to around a serious looking seventeen million. Take this number as the number of households without an internet connection as well.

The broadband think-tank of the United Kingdom desperately needs to carry out a deep introspection; to know where things went wrong despite an inspiring promise made by former communications minister Lord Carter, or the declaration made by Prime Minister Gordon Brown himself that internet was more significant than anything in the country.

Many factors can be identified for the reluctance on the part of such a huge number of people to take to the most advanced facet of communication – the internet. A crucial factor of the lot if not the most crucial one, is the lack of the so called broadband literacy. Other factors that follow are; the conservative mindset of certain people, a minority being apprehensive about the idea of digitalization, the financial aspect, etc.

The remedy according to Fox is coercion although, Chuck Doherty the broadband expert of UK Broadband Suppliers, thinks otherwise. According to him, a collective approach was all that was required, all the more for one reason that Virgin Media had already taken the initiative with gusto, in the form of broadband schools. Doherty thinks if the ISPs along with the government as well as other relevant media entities join hands to promote the concept, it would only be a matter of months perhaps.

Chuck Doherty is one person in the country that strongly advocates the need for a mass movement in the broadband sector that would help in the formation of the kind of consensus amongst the relevant entities in the sector. According to him, this would solve many a problem teasing the sector currently. He has also gone to the extent of terming the concept of consensus – the ‘Broadband Fraternity’.

Doherty summed up that any amount of coercion that highlights the master plan of Fox would only help to rub salt on the already inflicted injury, which is the public-scorn, called forth by the annual broadband levy proposal.

Reports say that the newly appointed Digital Inclusion Champion of the UK, Martha Lane Fox will be the person who would be leading the call for the digital heroes of Britain, which is part of a scheme that has been designed by TalkTalk, the internet service provider of Britain. TalkTalk is the subsidiary of mobile phone giant Carphone Warehouse, as well as its broadband wing.

Fox, the digital champion of Britain will seek for twelve individuals from across the country who have, using the technology such as broadband, brought about a positive change in the society. According to the TalkTalk digital hero scheme, each winner will receive an amount of GBP 5,000 to be used in their projects. Besides, they will also be availed a free broadband package of 18 month term, from the ISP.

Above all, an overall winner will be selected by the jury to be awarded with the grand prize of GBP 10,000. The significance given to this scheme can be understood from the opinion of the digital champion that it was these heroes who have strived to improve the accebility of digital technology, as well as provided the actual picture of its relevance and fun to the people in the local communities.

Fox also said that it was for that reason TalkTalk was introducing the digital hero accolades. She concluded saying that the TalkTalk awards for the digital heroes would aim to reward and celebrate the achievements of these heroes, and she herself was delighted to offer her support wholemindedly to the initiative.

TalkTalk UK ISP is arguably the largest internet service provider in the country with a colossal customer-base of more than 4.25 million via its different subsidiaries including Tiscali UK that was acquired by them a couple of weeks back. As a matter of fact, the ISP had only earlier this week disclosed that it had attracted 47,000 fresh customers in the second quarter of the year.

Seems the wise old men of Britain are distancing themselves from the digital segment of the country. This is more than apparent in the appointment of Lord Stephen Carter as the minister for communications, broadband and technology, and the recent posting of the thrity six year old Martha Lane Fox as the Digital Inclusion Champion. The Fox affair of the two, is increasingly startling as she has once portrayed herself as an eccentric driver who not only drove at breakneck speed, but also parked any where at any sort of angle.

Meanwhile, it would not be fair if a glance is not offered on the term Digital Inclusion and its relevances. A conceptual term pertinent to the European Union technological corridors, it stands for the consolidation of an inclusive information society. The concept also stands for a determined effort to convert the digital divide risk to digital cohesion. It is also, in other words called e-Inclusion. The concept covers certain developmental activities pertinent to the cohesive digital society, such as knowledge-base maintenance, development as well as deployment of research and technology, appropriate policy development and dissemination of best practices.

The main objective of the digital inclusion concept of the creation of a fair society by bringing economic and social benefits to the economy as a whole, besides individuals and communities, can only be achieved by warding off certain negative factors prevailing in the society. The predominant factors that hinder a pragmatic digital cohesion of the society today are; e-Competences pointing to the ducation disadvantage, e-Accessibility pointing to disabilities and gender disadvantages, e-Ageing pointing to age disadvantage and the geographical digital divide pointing to remoteness or ethnicity of the inhabited regions.

The term that once stood for the ideal links between technological and social disadvantage that had made it a priority, has been replaced by the new expression – Digital Britain, at least in the United Kingdom. The Champion of the Digital Inclusion whereas, is expected to operate as a high-profile public figure that can lift the profile of this concept by acquiring support from the local and central government, the third and the public sectors and the industry, even while their independence has been maintained. This post is planned to be independent of government, although it operated closely with the minister for the Digital Inclusion, the cross-Government team for the Digital Inclusion and the cabinet committee.

Coming back to the newly appointed Digital Inclusion Champion, the general public cannot be blamed if they thought the person to be a bit raw. Especially for the appointment following the stepping down of a digital engagement minister who was generally deemed as a good egg – Tom Watson. If his stepping down was caused by the pressures on his family as explained by him, one would say that Britain had obviously paid the penalty for picking up someone raw to entrust a responsible post. It is more or less the same case with Lord Carter as well, who too has reportedly taken the bizarre decision of stepping down from the post even as his Digital Britain promise to the nation was due, as well as boiling.

With these resignation melodramas, the onus seems to have comprehensively fallen on Fox, the new Digital Champion. The all important question is; is it asking too much from a nostalgic girl who had burst into tears when taken to the Movie Heaven for the first time, a girl who cherished her memories of going to parties and spending time with boys, a girl who flaunts her possession of tawdry hats, a girl who whirred a lot at night? Should her most attractive part of considering George Bush a worry, or her best asset that is her regrets towards driving recklessly once, which had nearly cost her life, help her persuading the mobile broadband sector to bridge the gaps left by BT’s aged copper lines? All food for history.

However, at present the commoner is believed to care a heck about all these questions, not if she help the government provide the promised broadband connections to them at the base speed of 2Mbps, not if she persuade the warring mobile broadband networks to an amicable solution, and definitely not, even if she epitomised herself as the champion of next generation fibre-broadband rollout, but only if she emerges successful in clearing their doubt that why on the earth, the commoner who had just a phone line to boast of, had to pay an extra levy.
