Despite, the vital ingredients for success in place for the digital age, it is unfortuante that the United Kingdom has hardly yet closed the intimidating digital gap between Europe and the ultrafast broadband speeds found in the Far East. This interestingly has been the view of the Culture minister of the United Kingdom, Jeremy Hunt.

The culture secretary outlined the significance of boosting broadband with a view to helping the United Kingdom benefit from commercial opportunities. Hunt said this while speaking at the Big Tent conference of Google. His view that Britain could seldom be a global broadband force in the digital age with the access speeds currently had by the people in the country is quite intriguing.

Hunt considers it as the reason why the first ambitions set out by him at the time of his entering the goverment was for the country for having Europe’s best super-fast cheapest broadband internet network. The faster the rollout of super fast broadband across the country was carried out, the sooner the next generation of applications would be springing up to meet the fresh commercial opportunities.

A need for a flexible approach towards the emerging internet technologies was also indicated by the Culture minister, aho alongside stated that wireless capabilities such as the internet tablet and smartphone markets were also expanding fast.

A sum of GBP 530 million has been committed by the government of the United Kingdom over the present period of spending review for boosting broadband internet connectivity, with a particular focus on rolling out next generation fibre optic broadband connectivity to those areas considered as digitally deprived.

The culture secretary of the United Kingdom, Jeremy Hunt had announced on Thursday, last week that there existed plans to set up in the United Kingdom, Europe’s best super-fast broadband internet network, by 2015. However, there are many analysts in the country that doubt how realistic would be his goals and how much were they forward-thinking as they were expected to be.

Super fast broadband, according to the definition given by Hunt as well as the Con-Lib coalition government, is broadband internet access at the speed of at least 25Mbps. Besides, he wants such a service to be rolled out to 90 per cent of the United Kingdom by 2015.

Here , the major challenge that Hunt is likely to face, along with the government will be of replacing infrastructure in those areas that are heavily developed. One can also not downplay the possibility of such a network getting redundant by the time it is there.

In terms of superfast broadband infrastructure, it is fact that the United Kingdom is already trailing its peers. This is more than evident in the country being placed considerably behind other countries both in and out of European Union, by the global ratings. This is in reality, bizarre for a nation that relies heavily on e-commerce and digital transfer of data.

This is a seriously ponderable condition, particularly when the countries such as the United States of America are already enjoying a sort of 4G service, although this would be disagreed by the purists.

The goal set by Hunt nevertheless is redoubtable, but time only can say whether the tough gambling will be providing with the sort of returns deserved by the United Kingdom to be genuinely competitive.

The review of communications and media started by the government has been with a view to effectuating a fresh act. The fresh move by the government is calling on the businesses of the country to extend their input. This was revealed by Hunt on Wednesday to the Oxford Media Convention.

It is interesting that the news arrived on the same day the announcement of moving the responsibility for a few crucial areas of technology policy from the BIS (Department for Business Innvoation and Skills) to the DCMS (Department for Culture Media and Sport) headed by Hunt.

Hunt who said that a green paper would be published by the government at the end of the year, which would set out the entire scope of the freshly proposed Communications Bill added that the new act intended to be realised in 2015 to last for at least ten years was not about tweaking the existing system; but redesigning it to make it suit the purpose.

The minister was more specific in addressing the TV regulation as he promised crutiny of the rules for internet content such as IPTV services. He played down the regulation of sites such as the YouTube video sharing website of Google, stating that the focus of the government was on IPTV services such as the ones set to be launched by Virgin Media and Sky in 2011 as well the BBC backed digital TV platform YouView.

The friendly and approachable culture secretary of the United Kingdom, who is pretty hard not to be liked is quite open than one may expect a cabinet secretary to be. Another unusual trait of Jeremy Hunt that does not universally fit a senior politcian is his appearing to mean what he says.

However, looking back at the public statements made by Hunt over the past few years, one might find it apparent that it is pretty hard to find anything that resembles a vivid thought through the strategy underlying, although what he says is undoubtedly genuinely meant.

He had once said that he would have the BBC charter ripped up, until someone pointing out that it could undermine the independence of BBC. Hunt had previously declared himself along with his party absolutely opposed to the policy of the previous government of using the licence fee for purposes outside of BBC. He said that any surplus should be returned to the licence fee payers.

This statement of Hunt rung around until the present chancellor George Osborne earmarked the licence fee for broadband rollout. Hunt followed this by setting up a high-powered committee with Greg Dyke at the helm. This sank leaving no trace after a public disagreement over the personal preference of Dyke that was to implement direct taxation in place of the licence fee.

This brings the thinkers to a couple of media policy priorities of the present times; next generation superfast broadband UKand plans for a fresh network comprising of as many as eighty local TV stations across the United Kingdom. Here as well the stakeholders of the industry are growing highly concerned as they seek consistency and coherence.

On the broadband sector, the high-level vision of fast broadbad for all is greatly appreciated, although many have questioned the practical strategy’s paucity and also the lack of funds for achieving it. To be frank, the insiders of the industry regard the chances of the United Kingdom having Europe’s fastest broadband by 2015 as nil.

The Culture Secretary of the United Kingdom, Jeremy Hunt outlined while speaking at the all-party parliamentary media group’s annual reception super fast fibre optic broadband internet and local media as segments of immediate interest for the newly elected coalition government.

Hunt said that they could have Europe’s fastest broadband if they got the regulatory framework in place within the next five years. He added that they have a responsibility to form a regulatory framework, which was in tune with the digital age that allowed industries to develop fresh business models that were going to work.

Hunt reassured his back up for a robust BBC, although according to him a strong competition was greatly required for the corporation. He added that for the economy of the country, the media sector could be as significant as financial services.

Hunt noted that the United Kingdom had the potential to sustain the most exciting media industry across the world. He also said that the government hardly viewed its role as backing up businesses or business models, which were struggling, however considered it as a helping hand for industries that adapt to change.

According to the Culture Minister, a convergence of a fresh type of wholly cross-platform multimedia firms in the media sector of the locality was widely desired.
