UK broadband supplier Virgin Media has claimed that more and more people are now showing interest in using high-speed broadband services, despite the present economical crisis straddling the UK. The statistical data that substantiates this claim is their 57,100 fresh customer sign ups that takes the total customer base up to 3.68 million.

Virgin Media had recently launched its express broadband service that offers an internet accessing speed of around 20Mbps that in its turn has been successful in attracting 1.28 million users. They had also hit a major landmark when they upgraded their 2Mbps subscribers to a 10Mbps service at no charge hike. In the process they had scrapped the entire 2Mbps category from their catalogue. This can be read as a foresightful, as well as shrewd move considering the current regime of the UK is contemplating on bringing broadband to the whole Britain under a base speed of 2Mbps.

Meanwhile, the telecoms regulator of Britain Ofcom has also declared that they would pose no regulatory barriers to the smooth emergence of a broadband infrastructure of super fast internet access. This ruling has obviously occurred as an incentive to BT who is planning to invest GBP 1.5billion in the optic fibre broadband network to enable 20 million British homes high speed internet access. The new technology when developed would realise the broadband speeds of up to 100Mbps. Recently, a 50Mbps service was deployed by Virgin Media that has already emerged as a fair success.

Ofcom, clearly reflecting the government policies and plans has given a statement through its chief Ed Richards that its message for the day is clear that no regulatory barriers will be raised on the path of super-fast broadband investment. He added that although they wanted to encourage investment, they were also keen in ensuring effective and fair competition prevailed in the future.
