It has been found that the commitment of the government of the United Kingdom to bringing 2Mbps fast broadband service to everyone in the country is gradually starting to get vital support from some crucial quarters.

The organisation that most recently came up with its support for the government’s universal service commitment has been Cisco, whose chief has expressed its support to the strategy with the argument that the UK was ahead of many of its rivals in Europe and the prime minister had the righ vision for bringing success.

During a recent meeting of John Chambers, the chief executive officer at Cisco and David Cameron, the former extended his support for the government’s strategy adding that quality broadband service was a crucial component for nations to flourish.

According to Chambers, the government of the United Kingdom along with the prime minister, strongly concieved the fact that broadband triggerred genuine productivity for competing on a global basis, and the commitment of the United Kingdom on broadband was pretty large wen compared to those of other countries of the European Union.

Chambers seemed to be seeing to it that he never appeared stingy in endorsing the prime minister. This reflects in his view that Cameron brought a lot of confidence to consumers and businesses besides being pretty articulate on the subject, especially the challenges faced such as how to deliver broadband service to all in the country.

It is also significant that net neutrality according to Chambers was a crucial issue for the future, although that was significant to considering the argument from the network operators’ point of view.

Sky Broadband UK, a major internet service provider operating in the United Kingdom has seen its fastest growth rate during quarter 4 of 2010. This is the best period of growth for Sky in over four years.

Figures let out by the internet service provider has revealed its adding over 20,000 consumers to its broadband internet subscription service by the end of 2010.

This can be compared to the broadband and TV bundle provider’s adding of around 101,000 fresh consumers in the same period, twelve months back. The current 3 million strong customer-base of Sky in the United Kingdom makes it one of the most prominent ISPs in the country.

In total, the revenue of Sky rised to 15 per cent on 2009 figures, reaching GBP 186 million in the last three months of 2010.

Meanwhile, a quarterly report of Sky Broadband published recently showed just below a quarter of its customers currently taking its bundled products that combine broadband, telephony and television.

It is also refreshing for the admirers of Sky that the provider is aiming at the extension of its services to users that were out and about, through the acquisition of a WiFi (wireless broadband) network knowned as The Cloud.

It has been envisioned that a fresh superfast broadband internet network deployed in Lancashire will be playing a crucial role in securing growth and economic recovery across the United Kingdom.

The recent move by Lancashire County Council, which is tendering for a sole network operator for providing a GBP 40 million a super-fast county-wide broadband service by 2014, has been deemed by many as a bold move.

The county-wide broadband network of superfast standards will help in stimulating activity particularly in the rural areas, besides boosting business productivity and attracting investment into the county from both international and UK-based firms.

Meanwhile, for selecting the ideal partner for delivering the ambitious scheme, Lancashire County Council will be engaging a competitive process.

The landmark project will make sure that the county is recognised among the leading councils in the United Kingdom for superfast broadband internet.

The approval for the plans has been delivered by the leader of the Lancashire County Council. This is expected to be confirmed in a report extended to the cabinet on Thursday.

With the last large blocks of the dwindling stock of addresses of the internet about to be handed out, the event that flags off their distribution has gained significance. The event is understood to be taking place in the next few days.

Following this, the five regional agencies, which hand out internet addresses, will be getting one of the remaining blocks of sixteen million addresses. It is expected that the last five blocks’ addresses would be totally exhausted by 2011 September.

Apnic, an agency which oversees internet addresses in the Asia Pacific region is likely to be responsible for the trigger event.

According to the chief scientist at Apnic, when the addresses stored by the agency falls below a critical threshold, more would be demanded from the the IANA (Internet Assigned Numbers Authority), the central repository.

When this request is processed by the central repository, it will be left with five /8s in the pool, with a /8 being the largest internet address block – comprising of 16 million addresses – handed out by the IANA.

IANA will be forced by this to activate the last /8 actins of its that entail its handing out a final /8 to all the five regional registries of the net.
