The leading newspaper circulated in the United Kingdom, the Financial Times has meanwhile reported that the governing body of the BBC had been deliberating if the scheme represented an ideal use of the money of the license payer, although it was ready to offer the green light.

According to another development, the two leading broadband providers operating in the United Kingdom, BT and TalkTalk would be backing the Project Canvas initiative. Other entities that has already announced their support to the venture are the terrestrial broadcasters; ITV, Channel 4 and Five.

According to the senior director for television at TalkTalk, Max Alexander’s comments made last week, the company would be leading to an enhancement in the quality of service it offered to four million customers in the United Kingdom, by joining the Project Canvas.

TalkTalk is the broadband service providing wing of the mobile phone retailer giant of the United Kingdom, Carphone Warehouse.

BT, the prominent fixed-line broadband provider operating in the United Kingdom, who is also currently undertaking the bigger responsibility of rolling out the next generation fibre optic broadband service across the country, has made a significant announcement that it would complete the superfast network in time for the Olympic Games of 2012.

It has been already announced by the internet service provider that the fibre-optic broadband network of GBP 1.5 million would offer certain customer groups internet access speeds of up to 100Mbps. The UK ISP has also claimed that the network would support HD video. However, the disappointment is that the rollout would be limited to 40 per cent of the UK homes; mainly in the cities and towns.

The broadband provider had in the initial days of the rollout said that it would be completed by only March 2013, although they now have claimed that it could be completed by 2012, since the rollout was ahead of schedule currently.

The chief executive officer of BT, Ian Livingston has claimed that they were expecting to provide internet access to four million households by the end of 2010, given the the progress they were making. He added that his company looked ahead to offer fibre optic broadband access to ten million households in the United Kingdom by the time of the commencement of the games. The London Olympics begin on July 27 2012.

BT that boasts of a customer-base of five million currently, has a potential rival in Virgin Media that offers many homes in the country, fibre optic broadband internet access speeds of up to 50Mbps.

According to this, an additional GBP 2.1 billion (2.4 billion Euro) would be earmarked to fund the plans. The funding has been set aside to be used in projects for economy recovery.

According to the European Union commissioner for Budget and Financial Programming, Algirdas Semeta, the latest announcement pointed to being ready for better times, stimulating growth and maintaining jobs.

Semeta added that in spite of the difficult economic climate, the budget for the year 2010 ensured that the financial sources to keep the schemes of European Union was on track as well as being focused on regions linked to recovery.

A relevant news that carried much significance has been the figures published by the leading research body Point Topic through an important research that more than 451 million people across the globe currently subscribed to broadband internet services.

Under the fresh plans put forward by the telecommunications regulator of the United Kingdom, Ofcom, the customers of broadband internet services across the country could be provided with better services from the broadband providers.

The telecoms watchdog has unveiled a set of fresh proposals predominantly with a view to improving the customer support offered by the various internet service providers operating in the United Kingdom.

It has been reported that the regulating body has called for the setting up of basic minimum standards for the handling of complaints in the country’s broadband internet industry. Besides this, it was also looking to provide additional information to make sure that the users were well aware of existing services for dispute resolution.

The regulator has been additionally pondering over ways to boost the transparency displayed by the internet service providers in the United Kingdom, regarding the performance levels.

According to the chief executive officer of Ofcom, Ed Richards, the regulating body wanted to improve the handling ways of the complained and queries made by the consumers in the country.

Richards added that the advantage was that the consumers were entitled to expect their broadband suppliers to address and try the complaints made by them, and where these could not be resolved, they ought to be made aware of the rights due for them of am independent and free broadband service for dispute resolution.

An Ofcom research had only earlier this week reported that the broadband internet services in the United Kingdom were among the most economical in the world.

It has been much interesting to hear a recently made suggestion that the Labour government’s proposal of a universal broadband coverage across the United Kingdom should be scrapped with a view to including efforts to boost the broadband internet connectionspeeds.

The suggestion was put forth by a broadband market expert researching the future broadband trends in the United Kingdom, Peter Bazalgette. Bazalgette serves as the non-executive director at Myvideo Rights.com, a syndication company.

According to Bazalgette, the broadband industry as well as the businesses in the United Kingdom could deeply benefit from an emphasis laid on superfast next generation broadband internet services. He also took pain to outline a conflict that existed that made clear that both superfast fibre optic broadband services and the universal broadband access could not be introduced through fibre optic cables at the same time.

The expert added that he wished to see the current government apply more stress on the next generation superfast fibre broadband services and less on their pet universal broadband internet service, which was all about a 2Mbps minimum speed broadband service to every household in the country.

Bazalgette concluded saying that he thought fast broadband internet service deserved the first priority for its obviously going to emerge as an economy stimulus.
