Setting Up a Wireless Network - Part 1

Part 1 - What you Need Running meters of Ethernet cable to connect to your computer(s) to your broadband internet service takes time and effort. Setting up a wireless network can streamline this process and is relatively simple now because of the tools available. This guide will give you a general guide on how to set up your own wireless network. Modem To connect and stay connected to broadband internet you need a modem. Most (but not all) broadband providers will provide a modem free of charge when you sign up for their service. If you are not provided with a modem, contact your provider to determine which modems are compatible with their service. Wireless Router To set up your wireless network you will need a wireless router. Wireless routers, like modems, can be purchased in your local computer store. The current standard for home use is 802.11g. Most routers sold support this standard. Wireless Network Adapter Every computer you intend to connect to your network will need to have a wireless network adapter. Most laptops sold today come with a network adapter already installed. Most desktop computers, however, do not automatically have this capability. To connect your desktop computers to the network you will need to buy separate adapters for each of them. Your local computer store should sell these adapters. You will need to either install the adapter into the desktop (instructions are provided) or connect the adapter via a USB port. When buying your adapters make sure they support the same standard as your router. As mentioned previously, the current standard for home use is 802.11g.
