January 7, 2007VoIP - An introduction to Internet TelephonyAlthough it's been possible to make phone calls through the internet since 1973, most of the world is just now obtaining the technology to enable them to use these services. Talking over the internet is commonly known as Voice over Internet Protocol, or VoIP. First developed by the US Department of Defence, VoIP requires a broadband connection. Most people haven't been using this technology because broadband connections were not widely available, or were too expensive. Now that broadband is more accessible, VoIP is a great alternative to land line phones. Differences Much of VoIP operates the same way as land line phones; however some parts of it operate differently. Most notably is the way emergency calls such as 999 are processed. Depending on your provider, emergency calls may be handled differently or the service may not be offered at all. Be sure to check how these calls will be handled before deciding on a particular provider. Many broadband providers also offer VoIP packages and sometimes you can get discounts if you order them with your broadband package. VoIP calls are usually less expensive than land line phone calls and international rates are usually very good. Quality Most times there is no difference in the quality between a land line and VoIP phone calls. The quality is mostly dependent on your connection speed, however even the slowest of all can usually handle VoIP phone calls. broadband packages What you need Depending on your internet provider you may need to install software or another router. VoIP phones are easily purchased which can be placed around your home. Check with your provider to see what type of phone is compatible with their service. You may also want to check with your provider to see if they have any discounts on equipment. Many times ISPs get discounts on equipment from the manufacturers to pass along to consumers!
March 16, 2007Broadband VoIP over Wi-FiThe well known Voice over IP service provider, Vonage, has just launched their services in the United Kingdom. The first customer voice over IP and broadband service products will be available this spring or summer, that includes a Wi-Fi phone that you are able to use at any location at all without having a different account. As well, a SMEL that offers you to be able to handle up to 50 lines through the normal equipment provided by PBX. Vonage users currently are paying £9.99 every month so they can take advantage of unlimited local and national calling and as well the very low internation rates to make everything even better. The subscribers connect this normal house phone into an adapter (the needed equipment is provided by Vonage - the adapter) which will route your phone calls onto your internet service provider connection. This works so that the there are both incoming and outgoing calls going across the internet. For the price of an addition £9.00 (total price a month of £18.99), you can get the small business plan which also includes a separate dedicated fax number. In the United States of America, the business had introduced their thoughts to bring the Wi-Fi handset to the consumers at the Consumer Electronics Show. Subscribers which have Wi-Fi are able to use the Wi-Fi phone without using an adapter (or use the same phone with the same phone number and anywhere that you want). The spokesman for Vonage, Jamie Serino mentioned that this product should be available in the United Kingdom around the same time of the launch in the United States of America. He also mentioned that it is just another utility to make the services better. The F-1000 handset which was created by UTStarcom had guaranteed that it has 100 hours of battery life and around three hours of talking time might be taking away one of the largest walls to voice over Wi-Fi. Jamie Serino said that the subscribles are accessed to be able to take their home phone number wherever they are in the world. As well they can make calls and take incoming calls as well whether your at the airport, hotel, resteraunt or just at a friends. Leaving behind the Wi-Fi's cost for using it anywhere in the world, the calls coming to you can be sent to your voice mail or to your mobile phone. The service that Vonage provides includes various free features that include voicemail which can be also forwarded to the subscribers e-mail in the form of a .WAV file, caller ID, and as well, the power to choose your phone number. Consumers are also able to add virtual phone numbers in different areas for the price of £2.99 per month. For this, for example, someone in the United Kingdom using the Vonage services can have a phone hooked up in New York that lets New York residents phone him and only get charged a local rate. Jamie Serino said that this is one of the newer features we have that we do charge on a monthly basis. While Vonage did not disclose the price of the Wi-Fi phone, it should be much higher then the price of a normal cell phone of which the mobile operators can support from the high charges for phone calls. Jamie Serino also mentioned that they may support the fee for the handset or just not look to make any profit from the handsets at all but it mostly depends on how much the utilities will cost the company. As of now, we are giving away a Linksys router, but the Wi-Fi headset would cost a bit more then a Linksys router. While Vonage has no desire or plans to offer an enterprise leveled telephone plan, they will likely launch a small to medium sized product within the next month or so. Jamie Serino said that this product would be gunned towards the SMEs with about 50 phone lines or more. The supplies will easily connect into a key system or PBX that already exists. Sadly, there may be an extension on the date for the launch of this product for residents of the United Kingdom because it means that there will be more utilities transferring through the VAR channels. With Vonage extending their service across the world it is showing us that there is definitely going to be more worldwide services in the future and we are all own big global village.
June 13, 2007Virgin media offers premium ratesVirgin Media has announced that they will smack 25 pence per minute charge on calls to its broadband technical support line from 1 July, 2007. This is because that, according to the company it gets too many off-topic questions. The customer care MD of Virgin Media, Steve Stewart declared that more than half the calls they received were regarding the general enquiries about using the internet or another company's software, rather than the broadband connection supplied by Virgin Media. He made it clear that the company cannot continue their high-quality service with the existing local rate charges. The company remain committed to offering the option of phone support and also provide a free status line, free email support and extensive information on their website. But this will not be of good use to those consumers who use the internet for very less time. The firm said that the revised charges would surely encourage calls seeking technical advice on broadband phone and allow it to continue to offer "best-in-class service". Virgin also announced that it would launch its own entertainment TV channel as a response to losing Sky One. The new channel Virgin 1 will go live on freeview in autumn. This new channel is designed to give the firm "more muscle to acquire and commission the very best US and UK programming"

January 24, 2007History of VoIPVoice over IP is changing the face of telecommunication for the industry at a very rapid speed and people are slowly and steadily moving from there conventional phone lines to the VoIP based line. Even businesses have moved over to the VoIP based backbone for the telecommunication solution. World has started to realize the potential of VoIP along with its features as the technology is running with a rapid race leaving behind those who do not want to change. This revolutionary product has changed everyone way of living and thinking as at this time those who have been upgrade to new technology would certainly remember what it used to be a while ago. We are here to check that history of VoIP to make sure we have not left any chapter uncovered. A small company by name VocalTec launched the first IP based phone software in the year 1995. This software was designed to run on a home computer just like what we use today with out headsets and microphone and all conversation were based on IP where system resources like the sound card, speakers and microphone were the only ones being used. The software 'Internet Phone' used then ITU standard H.323 protocol instead of SIP (which was not released) to commence the communication based on IP address. Initially this launch was a success as VocalTec continued to get an IPO in the year 1996. You can call 'Internet Phone' as the Skype of mind 90s which only had major drawback of non-availability of broadband connection. Most people ran the software on the modem based internet connection resulting in bad call quality and frequent disconnections and normal phone sounds much better than the 'Internet Phone'. But the first milestone was achieved as the first ever IP Phone was launched. By the time in year 1998,surverys reported approximately 1% of voice traffic was originated from Europe and 1% from USA which was a huge amount and major companied and newer companied jumped into this new field and started making good devices enabling PC to phone and phone to phone communication bringing a drastic change in telecommunications. Networking infrastructure leaders Cisco and Lucent went on to introduce there new products and equipment that could route the VoIP traffic effectively and by the time we reached year 2000, VoIP traffic arose to a noticeable 3% in Europe and almost 4% in north America. As the technology started to introduce great new features it also created big time loop hole in there programming structure. VoIP traffic was noticed and got priority over other forms of data transmission over a broadband connection using the QoS (Quality of Service) feature making sure the call quality is excellent without any major silent gaps and no dropped connection. VoIP equipment were made through and launched which major companies purchased. It was a record sale in 2006 when the VoIP sales touched £2.6 Billion and keeps growing at a rate of 30% per year. And it's been estimated the VoIP business would touch somewhere around £5 Billion by end 2008. VoIP offers great communications through Audio and Video together going through same medium.
February 21, 2007VOICE over Internet ProtocolVOIP is an electronic technology that permits you to make voice calls with the use of broadband internet service instead of a standard phone connection. There are some VOIP technologies that offer you a feature that can communicate other people using similar service, but others provides and allows you to call anyone as long as they have their telephone number. This will include local, mobile, international and long distance numbers. In addition, other VOIP services will work only with your computer by means of a special VOIP phone but, some traditional phone line can also access this feature as long as it is connected to a VOIP adapter. VOIP services divert your voice into the form of digital signal that traverse all throughout the internet. If you are calling an ordinary phone number, the signal is transformed to a regular telephone number before it will arrive to its exact destination. VOIP allows you also to make a direct call with the use of the PC, traditional or special VOIP phone attached to a specific adapter. This service is applicable also to wireless sites like parks, cafes and airports allowing you to stay connected with the internet and have your VOIP service get going wirelessly. High speed internet connection is required. It is most advantage if you have a broadband internet service. This can be obtained also by having a cable modem, networking on your local area or high speed connection such as DSL. Aside from this, a computer, specialized telephone and adaptor are also required. Some VOIP is compatible only over your PC via VOIP special phone, while others will require you to have a traditional phone attached to a special adapter. You will be needing software and costly microphone if you will use VOIP services directly to your computer. This special VOIP phone is plug straightly onto your broadband internet connection and function largely like a customary telephone. On the other hand, if you use a phone line with a special VOIP adapter, you can automatically dial whenever you want because the service provider will also equip you with a dial tone. With these features, you have now an idea how a VOIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) works if you will decide to have it for you. Understanding its basic functions and features will clearly provide some positive perceptions to those who are really interested to this service. However, before anything else, you have to secure first the necessary requirements for you to successfully attach on this. Otherwise, you will not meet the objective you have set, together with the special service a VOIP is offering right now. Secured everything and start to call your loved ones and families away from you. This is your chance to prove how important they are to you.

There are many web-based applications which hold their good reputation in the VoIP business. Before we could move any further and blindly invest into VoIP, it is always better to understand how far this technology is beneficial and what are its advantages and disadvantages. The Advantages
With so many advantages covered by VoIP, there are many phone models and other VoIP products in the market which can be shortlisted by an enterprise and test them to find a suitable one matching their requirements. As a matter of fact by only looking at the advantages one cannot make a sure decision to go for an enterprise wide purchase. We certainly will have to look forward to the disadvantages to feel the other side of the coin as well.
February 20, 2007What is VoIP - An X-plaNation!Technology has gone a long way in making life easier for people. The telephone, personal computers, laptops, the internet, cellular phones, pagers are just to name a few. Now, there is another big thing in the market, what we call 'VoIP'. VoIP is short for Voice over Internet Protocol. It is also called by different names such as Internet telephony, IP Telephony, Broadband phone, Broadband telephony and Voice over Broadband. Sounds pretty techie, right? Now, what is this technology about? Good question. This technology allows one to make voice calls with the use of broadband internet connection or any IP-based network. This allows anyone to make local, long distance and international calls without using a regular phone line. Companies that offer VoIP services are commonly referred to as providers. Two of the most popular US VoIP providers are AT&T and Vonage. With this technology, you can make calls from anywhere as long as you have broadband connectivity. How does VoIP works? VoIP is a revolutionary technology that converts your voice into a digital signal which will then be transmitted over the Internet. Before VoIP came to existence, voice communication between two places was completely analog in nature. This would mean that you voice is now going to travel over copper wire medium. With VoIP, phone calls are being routed through a packet switch and into an IP switched networks. To use VoIP, you will need a high speed internet connection or what is called "broadband" such as DSL (Digital Subscriber Line) or cable modem. You will also need any of these three devices: computer, adaptor or specialized phone. If you are using VoIP with a computer, you will need software, speakers, sound card, internet connection and a microphone. Software's can be bought for a cheaper price. Some companies offer these software's for free. Using a computer is, in fact, the easiest way to use VoIP and also the most practical as there is usually no charge for any calls except the fee for your regular monthly internet service provider. Softphone is a client software that you can use to download VoIP into your computer. There are also special VoIP phones. These phones look like the regular phones. The only difference is that this one has an RJ-45 Ethernet connector while the regular phones have RJ-11 phone connectors. Special VoIP phones directly connect to the router and they have all the necessary hardware and software needed for the call. With Wi-Fi phones, on the other hand, VoIP can be used from any Wi-Fi hot spots. No doubt, VoIP is another big leap to the world's advancing technology. However, everything has its downside. VoIP also has limitations and inconveniences. For one, the fact that it requires internet connectivity makes it less useful because it only means that the entire phone connection will be reliant upon the speed and quality of the Internet connection it is using. However, this may not be such a big problem as VoIP systems can also use regular phone lines. Power interruption is also a problem if you are using computers or cordless phones. The worst limitation is that you can't make an emergency call with VoIP. However, it won't be long that developers will soon find a solution to these limitations.
February 26, 2007Vonage Gets Rave ReviewsVonage is the pioneer of VoIP phone service. Vonage came at the very first of VoIP technology. VoIP was limited to very few people at the time of Vonage. Only geeks and technophiles used to use VoIP. It got bitter complains from the initial subscribers because it was not so good. Obviously it had some drawbacks in its voice quality. After all they were serving the very new thing. Soon it was improved with good service and accepted to by the millions of subscribers. Vonage was user friendly. People found Vonage very easy to install. Subscribers loved it because of that also. This actually made traditional phones users to turn towards the new system quiet easily. All they have to do was to plug a phone cable and the broadband internet connection into the adaptor box. That was so easy. Once this has been done and connected to the server they the phone is ready to use. It was a new service which was easy to install. People always love to try something new. Plus its price was other thing which made easy to be spread out there among the subscribers. Vonage phone user was happy with it because of the low prices because they were paying almost double of what they paid for Vonage. So, people started to move towards the Vonage from the traditional land lines. Later other VoIP services were introduced by various other Internet Service Providers. The price of Vonage was quite expensive but Vonage is still the choice of so many peoples. It has very large number of subscribers. Vonage's subscribers want to reduce the price advantage they've come to expect but it is becoming quite difficult to do so because of the large number of subscriber base and rising costs. Other VoIP services are now cheaper than Vonage. However people believe that Vonage is providing better services than the smaller and newer entrants. Yet they are not happy with the price. They will definitely believe that they are being better served if Vonage cuts it price to the market level. Although they get comment about the voice quality at the starting Vonage subscriber do not have any complaints about that nowadays. It is not serving their subscriber with better, may be the best voice quality. Subscribers are happy with its additional facilities like caller id, repeat dialing, return dial and three-way calling. You can even have call-waiting, call waiting disable functions facilities. Other services are. Vonage also provides call blocking, distinctive ringing, call filtering, secondary virtual phone number, sequential ringing. Subscribers are even able to retain their phone number even if they moved to the different city. Additional service line; toll-free number and web-based management are other features which have won additional favorable reviews. Toll free numbers are the extremely popular these days. Vonage is doing great in the aspect of quality of service. Doesn't matter its more expensive than other, subscribers are happy with it.
September 12, 2008Broadband switching sees growth during the quarterBroadband switching in the UK has grown by 8.5 percent during the quarter between May and July 2008, according to the data released by Froggybank. The survey shows that broadband users have changed their providers to take advantage of cheap broadband deals and the new features that come with broadband packages and bundles. Froggybank conducted the survey using a sample of 500,000 UK broadband customers to find out these results. According to the report, the number of broadband customers who go for broadband bundles that combine broadband internet service with home phone, satellite TV and mobile phone broadband services from their existing provider shows a growth of 7.5 percent during the quarter. As many internet providers also include bundled packages which are relatively cheaper than stand-alone broadband packages, broadband users are increasingly opting for broadband bundles, according to the report. Nadeem Azam, Marketing Manger of Froggybank has commented: As the new migratory regulations issued by Ofcom, UK telecom regulator have made the switching process much easier, nearly one-third of the broadband customers switch their providers, according to a report. It should be noted that the internet providers should issue the MAC number within five working days while independent regulators like Ofcom, Otelo and ISPA help the customers who encounter problems during the switching process.
August 7, 2007ASA finds fault with Virgin advertsThe ASA pronounced its judgment over two complaints made by Sky against two press adverts which compare Virgin Media's and Sky's TV, broadband and phone services. The first ad compares Virgin Media's and Sky's TV, broadband and phone services with respect to TV package, broadband speed and download limits offered by these companies. However, Sky charged Virgin with unfair comparison of its products as Sky claims its products are comparable with Virgin's packages. In another advert, Virgin has announced a package that would include its TV, Broadband and Phone services. The package will also offer 125 channels plus access to a vast library of films and TV shows Broadband with no download limits. In addition, phone services will offer unlimited weekend calls to any UK landline to Virgin's customers. In small print, the advert says the package was priced £30 a month for 12 months and then the standard prices (£39) would apply. Sky accused Virgin of misleading the customers as the advert gave an impression that the price was not confined to any time frame and perceived as a standard rate. In addition, Sky also charged Virgin with giving false information over the services offered by Sky. For example, Sky's other divisions offer additional services which are similar to services offered by Virgin. Similarly, Sky also provides 12-month warranty for its digital satellite equipment while advert by Virgin gave out an impression that such free servicing and repairs were only offered by Virgin. After scrutinizing the charges made by Sky and the responses given by Virgin, the ASA concluded that the comparison between Virgin's advertised 2Mb service and Sky's 8Mb broadband service is unfair while Sky's 2 Mb service was found to be comparable or even better than Virgin's 2 Mb package. Likewise, Virgin's advert regarding its package did not quote clearly whether it was promotional offer as it was given only in small print thus misleading the customers over the standard price of the package. Finally, the ASA had instructed Virgin not to repeat these adverts while getting help from the CAP Copy Advice Team to make necessary amendments.
January 20, 2007Broadband Booster Can Improve VoIP QualityAs we all know, a broadband connection is by far faster that a dial-up connection and there are still users complaining about their upload and download speed. They still find a bit of delay in there browsing experience. The fact is the latency is not with their browsing experience, it's the ISP cable internet that has this slowness due to heavy congested traffic. The point is a user will not think this side as an ISP can prove the connection speed by using simple connection strength tools. Actually, there is a difference in the cable and xDSL browsing experience and the most of you do is to stick to anyone of them as long as you can bar this small delay and as long as it doesn't cost you a fortune for simple browsing, download and upload. With any xDSL which require a additional phone line, which means every month additional phone rental charges and you don't have that much or are tired of paying so much then the only option left you right now is to go for a Cable T-1 service and plug-in a VoIP Phone which would cost much lower than a conventional phone. Some people find a VoIP phone quality better than there conventional line and every other might say the exact opposite, so you never know what people actually want. Those ones who are keen on saving money and go for the cable plus VoIP phone solution. Many people have testified that a VoIP phone with Cable T-1 connection has save them more than 300GBP a month which a huge amount. They are those who can even live up with an occasioned dropped call. But there were many who focused on describing their fair to bad VoIP experience because of their internet connection. There is one good product available in the market by name 'Hawking Broadband Booster'. This device works best in eliminating the so called delay in your internet connection and constant monitoring of incoming and outgoing data and re-grouping the packets as per priority algorithm. It's amazing and the so called delay is gone forever as every time this device notices congestion, it clears it leaving a lot better breathing space for both your cable modem and the wireless router. The only part which can make you think twice before opting for this device is its price. This small box will cost some near about 75GBP and all you need to do is to plug your booster between your modem and router. For some reason if don't like this product, you can always return it back in time to get your money back. The dive instantly improves your internet connection speed giving an extra boost that most people desire especially when talking over a VoIP phone. This device has been tested by many who confirm the quality and reliability of the device as most of them have been talking over 3000 minutes and never got any call dropped. It's a recommended product or any high-speed broadband internet surfer or gamer or web hosting company. You will not complain about the inconsistent wireless signal strength when using VoIP as it will take care of everything.
