BSA For Reprimanding UK Broadband ISPs to Limit Online Piracy

Software PiracyBSA, the acronym for Business Software Allowance, which is a non-profit trade association realized with a primary view to advance the ambitions of the software industry along with its business associates. BSA is at present regarded as the front runner amongst the dedicated organizations in the world toiling for the promotion of a legal as well as safe digital world. The organization works in more than eighty countries, and has its head quarter in Washington.

BSA has once again appeared in the limelight, with its revelation that above 27 percent of software in the UK PCs at present were illegal. This was revealed by the agency in their recently released 6th annual IDC global piracy study. It also disclosed that in the year 2008, the losses related to the industry amounted to GBP 1.49 billion, which was the highest level ever witnessed in the history. The survey conducted by BSA also blames the boost in the broadband internet access and resultant P2P file sharing for creating a friendlier environment for internet piracy.

Nevertheless, contrary to a common belief, the piracy rate in the UK software segment has stalled over the past five years. The history to be precise is; a drop in 2007 to 26 percent, preceding a constant 27 percent for three years prior to that, only to witness a rise yet again in 2009. Speaking of the global standards, half of hundred ten countries all over the world that was subjected to the survey, saw only a nominal 12 percent increase in internet piracy rates.

To effectively counter the menace of online piracy, BSA has forwarded a set of four suggestions for solution proposals of the government. The predominant one among the four is their advice to the government to support a soft regulatory approach to the online software piracy along with the development of a government as well as Ofcom recommended code of practice between right holders and the broadband ISPs. The second advice on the formation of a body focusing on education and enforcement is also significant. The final two are all about augmenting public awareness and education, and leading by example by ensuring the use of legitimate software in the public sector.

Tiscali named the best ISP by a customer report

The J.D. Power and Associates released its annual UK Broadband Internet Service Provider Satisfaction report which places Tiscali on the top for the overall customer satisfaction. The study which has taken the performance of eight ISPs in UK for comparison also reveals that there were just 42 index points between the best ISP and the worst ISP in terms of customer satisfaction, although there are many other ISPs who were not considered for the study.

The study also shows that the customer satisfaction levels have fallen to an average 645 indicating 9 points decline this year. This invariably indicates how most ISPs continue to fall behind as far as customer service or technical support are concerned thus resulting in overall decline in performance and reliability.

Caspar Tearle of J.D. Power and Associates says that complaints to customer service departments of most ISPs have risen again in 2007.
“The 2007 study finds that call waiting times continue to increase when customers contact their ISP, with customers now waiting an average of 17 minutes before initially speaking with a representative,” he further said.

The report further shows that broadband users spend less money for service, indicating a fall of more than 20 percent from what they spent in 2006. However, on average, broadband speeds have risen up to 4.87Mbps from 3.50 Mbps while service disruptions show a marginal increase in year-on-year.

The report used various criteria to judge the best ISP for the overall customer satisfaction like performance and reliability, customer service/technical support, cost, billing, e-mail services etc. The study used the data based on replies from over 1,683 broadband users in the UK. Tiscali was adjudged the best ISP with 668 points with Virgin following it closely (660 points). BT scored 626 and was last in the table while the industry average was 645.

The study also shows that nearly half of the internet users have setup wireless networks at home. Most customers use firewall on their PCS, however the study also shows there was a marginal decline in using firewall last year.

The report also indicated the growing interest in broadband bundles as two-thirds of the respondents were found to have subscribed to some bundle which offered phone or mobile or TV service with their broadband packages.

What is VoIP - An X-plaNation!

Technology has gone a long way in making life easier for people. The telephone, personal computers, laptops, the internet, cellular phones, pagers are just to name a few. Now, there is another big thing in the market, what we call 'VoIP'. VoIP is short for Voice over Internet Protocol. It is also called by different names such as Internet telephony, IP Telephony, Broadband phone, Broadband telephony and Voice over Broadband. Sounds pretty techie, right? Now, what is this technology about? Good question. This technology allows one to make voice calls with the use of broadband internet connection or any IP-based network. This allows anyone to make local, long distance and international calls without using a regular phone line. Companies that offer VoIP services are commonly referred to as providers. Two of the most popular US VoIP providers are AT&T and Vonage. With this technology, you can make calls from anywhere as long as you have broadband connectivity.

How does VoIP works? VoIP is a revolutionary technology that converts your voice into a digital signal which will then be transmitted over the Internet. Before VoIP came to existence, voice communication between two places was completely analog in nature. This would mean that you voice is now going to travel over copper wire medium. With VoIP, phone calls are being routed through a packet switch and into an IP switched networks.

To use VoIP, you will need a high speed internet connection or what is called "broadband" such as DSL (Digital Subscriber Line) or cable modem. You will also need any of these three devices: computer, adaptor or specialized phone.

If you are using VoIP with a computer, you will need software, speakers, sound card, internet connection and a microphone. Software's can be bought for a cheaper price. Some companies offer these software's for free. Using a computer is, in fact, the easiest way to use VoIP and also the most practical as there is usually no charge for any calls except the fee for your regular monthly internet service provider. Softphone is a client software that you can use to download VoIP into your computer.

There are also special VoIP phones. These phones look like the regular phones. The only difference is that this one has an RJ-45 Ethernet connector while the regular phones have RJ-11 phone connectors. Special VoIP phones directly connect to the router and they have all the necessary hardware and software needed for the call. With Wi-Fi phones, on the other hand, VoIP can be used from any Wi-Fi hot spots.

No doubt, VoIP is another big leap to the world's advancing technology. However, everything has its downside. VoIP also has limitations and inconveniences. For one, the fact that it requires internet connectivity makes it less useful because it only means that the entire phone connection will be reliant upon the speed and quality of the Internet connection it is using. However, this may not be such a big problem as VoIP systems can also use regular phone lines. Power interruption is also a problem if you are using computers or cordless phones. The worst limitation is that you can't make an emergency call with VoIP. However, it won't be long that developers will soon find a solution to these limitations.

Security tips on using social networks and wi-fi hotspots

According to the latest report from getsafeonline, more than three-fourths of internet browsers (88 %) are aware of the need of basic internet security although most of them are still vulnerable to security risks thanks to the new emerging technologies like Wifi and P2P social networks. It is found from the survey that majority of the internet users install some kind of protection features like firewall, anti-virus and anti-spam software in their PCs, however, when they go wireless using hotspots or log on into social networking sites, they are blissfully unaware of the risks involved and expose themselves to a large number of other internet users.

Gillian Merron, the Cabinet Office Minister asked the new generation of internet users to be more alert in such situations:
“The internet is a fantastic tool, whether you use it at home, in school, at your local library or at work. The risks we are highlighting today can be easily fixed and do not mean that people should stop using social networking sites and wireless networks. People simply need to take a few basic steps and simple precautions which they can find by going to www.getsafeonline.org to help keep themselves, their families and their businesses safe online.”

Social networking sites pose enormous threat to privacy and  security of those who log into those sites. In the UK, more than 10 million are members of a networking site. What is alarming is the fact that one-fourth of them voluntarily (or obliged to) enter personal details like telephone number, email address and such details which are displayed as profiles to other users. Some users, especially youth, also post the photos and details of other people without getting their permission causing threats to their privacy.

The Managing Director of getsafeonline, Tony Neate, cautions that such revelation of personal details could be harmful  as there are chances that they might be exploited by criminals.

“Your date of birth and where you live is enough for someone to set up a credit card in your name. So whilst most people wouldn’t give this information to a stranger in real life, they will happily post it online where people they don’t know can see it.”

It was also found that wifi access via public hotspots is increasingly popular these days. More than 7.8 million people are found to be regularly using public hotspots which can be lacking in security features and enable anyone to indulge in wifi thefts. While most people take much more care when they  set up their personal wireless broadband or network in their homes or offices with all security features, however, they often fail to realize the security risks they may face when they use public hotspots. These places often become a haven for criminals who may intercept, steal and even add or delete the files you access via wireless network.

Is there anyway to check these problems? “Yes” says Neatle, “The good news is that a few basic steps and simple precautions are enough to prevent these problems and stop online criminals in their tracks.”
