July 26, 2007OMTP's new guidelines for its membersOMTP (Open Mobile Terminal Platform) issued some guidelines to its members (mobile network operators and mobile phone makers) with regards to what kind of settings they can provide in the handsets they roll out. OMTP has instructed its handset manufacturers that those phones which come with VoIP services preinstalled should follow the new norms while the phones which download such applications later will be exempted from them. As per what has been practiced so far, the VoIP service providers would usually disable many features of VoIP applications on cheaper models such as unlocking the application thus making the sets unusable in other networks such as SIM lock does in a mobile network. However, the new instructions make the operators to remove the lock once the contract period of the service comes to an end, so that phones can be used in other networks. In addition, the operators should inform their customers that VoIP functions are deactivated in their phones on the time of purchase. OMTP is mobile industry organization having nine full members that include Orange, Vodafone, T mobile etc. In addition, OMTP also has mobile phone manufacturers as sponsors including AOL, Ericsson, Motorola , Nokia etc. | ||
