Ofcom publishes super-fast broadband action plan
The UK telecom regulator, Ofcom has published its consultation documents on delivering super-fast broadband in the UK. The action plan released by the regulator aims at drawing the investment schemes that will encourage many broadband providers to participate in the project thus resulting in more choices for customers.
Broadband uptake in the UK has reached 58 percent of the households in less than eight years while there is also significant demand for high speed broadband services which provide better browsing experience, more reliable and high quality services, according to the Ofcom report.
While pointing out the various uses of high speed broadband internet packages in the current UK broadband scenario, the telecom watchdog has also pointed out the need of consumer choices which will promote the healthy competition among the internet providers.
“For very high speed broadband to be a success, consumers must be aware of the services on offer, with suitable information to choose between alternatives. They must also be able to exercise choice by being able to move from one service provider to another. This will require good quality migration processes for consumers moving to next generation access networks, back from them, or between different operators’ networks.â€
As for the technologies that will be used to deliver super-fast broadband in the UK, Ofcom will focus on the networks that will benefit both the consumers and the society as a whole. Ofcom will encourage “private sector led investment in the right technology at the right time, based on a competitive environment, and supported by the right regulatory framework.â€
Dave Richards, Ofcom’s Chief Executive said:
“Fibre networks are one of the most exciting developments in communications that the UK has ever seen,”
He further said:
“Ofcom’s plan of action will encourage further investment while promoting and sustaining competition so we can all benefit.”
