Ofcom publishes statement on awarding highspeed spectrum bands

Ofcom, the UK telecom regulator published the documents regarding the auction of wireless telegraphy licences for use of the 10 GHz, 28 GHz, 32 GHz and 40 GHz spectrum bands. Earlier, Ofcom released its consultations this year and also a discussion paper in this regard.

According to the draft statutory instruments, Ofcom has looked into various responses made until the last consultation in August, 2007. Once the responses are duly scrutinized and analyzed, four statutory instruments are to be made by Ofcom for registration and publication. It is expected that all the statutory instruments will be enforced on 21st December this year.  Ofcom also announced that the last date of receipt of applications will be around 16 January 2008 although the exact date will be published after the implementation of statutory instruments.

Wireless broadband requires good infrastructure that can guarantee wide coverage of wireless signals. When the high frequency spectrum bands are used, the end users are able to get fast, reliable, continuous connectivity at any place. However, there are issues raised by some respondents regarding the proper allocation of spectrum suited to specific geographical areas.

Finally, Ofcom is confident that the auction Ofcom believes that the auction of high frequency spectrum will not only help in awarding the spectrum to the right candidate but will also help the watchdog monitor the use of the spectrum by the applicants.

In addition, Ofcom also thinks that the auction will promote competition in
downstream markets and is likely to benefit many business sectors. As a result the benefits will reach consumers who belong to the user group of different spectrum band.
