Next Generation Broadband Rollout to be Completed by 2012

BT, the prominent fixed-line broadband provider operating in the United Kingdom, who is also currently undertaking the bigger responsibility of rolling out the next generation fibre optic broadband service across the country, has made a significant annBroadband Rolloutouncement that it would complete the superfast network in time for the Olympic Games of 2012.

It has been already announced by the internet service provider that the fibre-optic broadband network of GBP 1.5 million would offer certain customer groups internet access speeds of up to 100Mbps. The UK ISP has also claimed that the network would support HD video. However, the disappointment is that the rollout would be limited to 40 per cent of the UK homes; mainly in the cities and towns.

The broadband provider had in the initial days of the rollout said that it would be completed by only March 2013, although they now have claimed that it could be completed by 2012, since the rollout was ahead of schedule currently.

The chief executive officer of BT, Ian Livingston has claimed that they were expecting to provide internet access to four million households by the end of 2010, given the the progress they were making. He added that his company looked ahead to offer fibre optic broadband access to ten million households in the United Kingdom by the time of the commencement of the games. The London Olympics begin on July 27 2012.

BT that boasts of a customer-base of five million currently, has a potential rival in Virgin Media that offers many homes in the country, fibre optic broadband internet access speeds of up to 50Mbps.
