January 17, 2007My Wireless BroadbandIts broadband time and everyone is ready to use it to best fit their needs. Wireless broadband routers (devices) and Network cards are available at any computer store and you can even buy them online and get the delivered at your door steps. Now, If you happens to be the one who recently purchase a broadband connection with an excitement to experience a high speed internet connection but unfortunately like many newbie's, don't know how configure the broadband router, I guess this is what you should be looking at! Understanding what broadband is should be your first priority and looks like not many people are interested to learn facts that easy. Nevermind, to say 'what wireless broadband is' in simple words would be to connect to a device over short-radio waves without any wires. Next question would be to know how the internet access works does over wireless. When you buy a broadband connection, your telephone line gets divided in 2 channels, 1 for voice and another one for data (internet). You use a splitter to get one portion of RJ-11 cable into your broadband modem (its nothing but your wireless router) and another one directly to your phone line. Once the modem is connected, it automatically detects the signal and power the radio to broadcast itself as a new wireless network available for users to connect using there wireless LAN adapter (which in most laptops are built-in). If you happens to use your desktop without wireless network adapted, then option you have is to either stretch an Ethernet cable between your desktop and wireless router or buy a new wireless network adapter and plug it into your computer when its powered off. In cases, laptop or desktop, once the computer is up and running, it detects the available wireless network (boradcasted by router) near the task bar in the form a yellow color balloon which says "Wireless network has been identified". Click on that balloon and you shall now get a popup window showing all the available wireless networks. For some reason if you do not see your wireless connection, click on the REFRESH button to get the new list of devices broadcasting themselves as available. There is every possibility that you shall look at more than one network which is not yours. Only connect to your legitimate wireless connection. Once you click on connect, your computer's wireless adapters goes in and registers its name with MAC (media access control or the adapter's hardware vendor address). Guess what! Now you are connected and will receive an IP address from the wireless router which makes sure you and the router are on the same network. This is how you get connected and are now free to browse the internet for as long as you want. Remember, use your wireless connection until you are working and switch it off once you are finished with you day's work. Read the manual to setup your wireless router for the best security and to take advantage of other features. | ||
