Mobile Broadband Firms will Meet Carter to Save Broadband Deal

The big five mobile phone/mobile broadband networks are planning to meet the communications minister of the United Kingdom, Lord Stephen Carter for a last effort to thrash out a comprehensive as well as fruitful contract that could salvage the dream of the minister for communications, which is all about providing broadband internet access to every household in the country by 2012.

PD*26570683The meeting is fixed for June 2nd, following the proposal of Kip meek, the lieutenant to Carter, to effectively cap the Vodafone and O2 owned 900MHz mobile spectrum. He also proposed to avail the freed spectrum due to the snalogue television switch off, to the mobile broadband sector enhancement.

The big five, namely Vodafone, Orange, O2, T-Mobile and 3 Broadband will have a common problem to discuss in the presence of the communications minister. The protruding issue being the reluctance of O2 and Vodafone to spare even nominal spectrum for others, is obvious to divide the group into two.

The side consisting Orange, 3 and T-Mobile is expected to put forth their demand of forcefully disengaging the two privileged mobile networks from owning the spectrum that was allocated to them in the 1980s. They would also demand for tighter caps on the two firms so that they are forced to put to sale some spectrum, if they wanted to acquire any spare television spectrum that suits rural broadband provision.

Lord Carter is also under immense pressure to resolve this problem revolving around radio spectrum. He would be pleased to put an end to this problem before his reading out the final Digital Britain report in mid June. He may also be facing a situation marked by the humiliation of accepting as well as declaring the bitter fact that his pet universal broadband plan’s implementation would be impossible for at least five more years, if the spectrum dispute is left unresolved.
