November 30, 2007Many cancel landlines and keep mobiles - Eurostat ResearchEurostat, the research and statistics body of the European Commissions says that there is an increasing uptake of mobile services while a large number of Europeans cancel their landline connections simultaneously. The survey conducted by Eurostat shows that 18 percent of Europeans who previously had landlines, cancelled the services and went for mobile connections. It does not mean that the landline services have been witnessing a downfall. In fact, the number of landline phone connections per hundred persons has increased from 43 to 48 during ten years between 1995 and 2005. Interestingly, in many East European countries like Lithuania, Latvia and Slovakia, a number of families/individuals who apply for new connections often choose mobile connections. Lithuania ranks first as far as the number of people who left landline connection for a mobile service is concerned. Nearly, half of the landline customers in Lithuania abandoned the landlines and chose some mobile service. Among the European nations which have made tremendous advancements in broadband technology, Italy had the 25 percent of its landline connections being cancelled during the last quarter. In countries like Germany, France and the UK, more than ten percent of the landline owners, left their service providers/service and chose mobile service. If one looks into the issues that caused many people to give up their landline connections, one will find out that the line rental and the expensive call rates of the home phone services drive these people to find out cheaper services. It is true that mobile services have greater mobility and help the people keep in touch with their kith and ken at anytime. In addition, many mobile service providers come with cheap call plans with special offers that lure many customers to take the mobile service. | ||
