Lutz Schuler becomes new CEO of Virgin Media UK

Liberty Global, the parent company of Virgin Media UK, has recently announced that they have appointed Lutz Schuler as their new CEO for Virgin Media UK replacing Tom Mockridge, who held the position for 6 years. Lutz Schuler, who is the Chief Operating Officer, took charge the position last September only.

Tom Mockridge has been looking after the restructure of Virgin Media when acquired by Liberty Global in the year 2013. He also supported in leading £3bn worth Project Lightning network expansion aimed to cover an additional 4m premises in the UK by 2019 with Hybrid fibre and FTTP.

Recent reports said that Liberty Global may review the position of Virgin Media in the UK, not only for future acquisitions prospects but also whether they can open up their network for usage by the rivals. This may depend on how they respond to their full fibre roll outs and adopting strategy shifts including change of leadership. Mockridge, who is praised for his work, will go back to his base to Italy. He added that Virgin Media has revived well in their business when they became part of Liberty Global. Now VM is leading the advance of the thriving digital economy with their best programmes connecting premises with broadband.

CEO of Liberty Global and Chair of VM – Mike Fries said that Lutz is an outstanding leader and operator and he led a talented team in Germany for around 8 years. He has created a positive impact immediately upon his joining VM last year by uniting the team with a clear strategy for long lasting and best in class growth. He along with Tom and Lutz have prepared for this moment and Lutz will take up.

Lutz Schüler said that he feel thrilled to lead Virgin Media. He is more excited, after he worked for 7 months in operations, about their continued growth potential that they serve in the UK and Ireland.

The change is expected to take effect on June 11, 2019.
