Broadband led to addiction to the web

The broadband research firm, YouGov says in its latest report that the majority of UK population (76%) could not carry out their day-to-day activities without the Internet while 44% of them often get frustrated when they have problems related with connectivity. Significant portion of the internet users (27%) also suffer from stress related problems when they are not able to get connected to the internet. This indicates that business broadband has become an integral part of the both consumers and business users who have various communication needs in their relative fields.

As consumer broadband offers various options to the broadband customers nowadays, the broadband uptake in the UK has risen quite significantly during the last two years. Many broadband internet providers in the UK launch new products with higher speeds, better download limits and other value added services. The prices of unlimited broadband packages have also come down while the service quality has improved, thanks to the competitive UK broadband market and the growing awareness of broadband customers.

However, using broadband has led to the addiction to the web, according to the psychologist, Dr David Lewis. Dr. Lewis has been treating people who suffer from discomgoogolation, the discomfort and stress that a broadband user experiences when he left unconnected to the internet.

“The proliferation of broadband has meant for the first time in history we’ve entered a culture of ‘instant answers’. A galaxy of information is just a mouse click away and we have become addicted to the web. When unable to get online, discomgoogolation takes over,”

The report also shows that 50 percent of the people spend 1 to 4 hours online during the day. One-fifths of the population spends more time online than the time they spend with their friends or families. Nearly half of the people (47%) think internet is more important than other issues including religion. To nearly 20 percent of the people, internet matters more important than their partners.
