Inmarsat Maritime launches satellite broadband service to boats and yachts

Inmarsat’s Fleet One service provides on the same network for professional maritime industry, a service to small vessel owners, to use one of the world’s most advanced global network of satellite broadband. Users will be able to access the internet while at sea and also have telephone conversations or send SMS, while on-board.

Fleet One is delivered using a small terminal that can be easily and quickly installed, to remain connected at all times. The terminal can offer up to 100Kpbs speeds and has been specially created for leisure yachts and fishing vessels, providing a cost effective solution to the maritime community, and an opportunity for Imersat’s business. The system also supports Inmarsat’s unique ‘505’ safety service. In an emergency the user can alert safety services of the vessel’s position and nature of distress.

Inmarsat’s President, Frank Coles, said Fleet One will for the first time bring within reach satellite services to a large market of unconnected vessels out at sea. Now yachts and fishing vessels have a new simple solution, based on the same reliable, robust technologies provide to larger vessels, to get the advantage of dependable online connectivity, he added.
