Huawei & Nokia – new Kit providers to Openreach’s FTTP rollout

Openreach has informed that they have given contracts to Huwwei & Nokia to supply new electronics – headend which support their 1Gbps capable FTTP roll out under their current Fibre First project to reach 3 m premises in the UK by 2020 end.

Both the companies Huawei & Nokia have been working since long time with the network provider Openreach, particularly to say Huawei’s products used in VDSL2/FTTC and G.fast technology. And the current announcement of awarding the contracts to them is not a surprise. The exchange based equipment – Headend from Huawei has been already used in their FTTP roll outs and the similar kit from Nokia is going to start installation from July 2019. Also to say that lots of kits from Huawei are going to be part of EE’s future 5G mobile network deployment and the provider has already selected new ReefShark chipsets of Nokia to support along side.

The FTTP/H network coverage includes only 5.6 lakh premises, but Openreach wants to increase this number for which it has planned to hire 3500 engineers. The initial roll out focuses on UK towns & cities with Birmingham, Bristol, Cardiff, Exeter, Edinburgh, London, Liverpool, Leeds and Manchester that are confirmed. And Openreach is desirous to reach 10m premises by 2025. This could be achieved only with the support of other ISPs, relaxed regulations of authority, solutions with logistical barriers issues, government’s review on future telecom infrastructure etc. We should also understand that the cost of deploying FTTP is costly and that would cover between £3 to £6 billion to cover 10 m premises.

CTO & NGA Operations Director of Openreach – Peter Bell said that they are going to make available FTTP to 3 million premises by 2020 end and they want to reach 10 million by the middle of 2020s. As the demand in the UK is double the data, openreach is continuously working to invest for its network upgradations to meet such demands in the digital economy.

President of Huawei Access Network – Jeffrey Zhou said that as a long run partner, they are looking forward happily to work with Openrech’s network team. They are welcoming this chance to help in building better networks for openreach’s customers and they are striving to help to build a better connected UK.

President of Nokia Fixed Networks – Frederic Guillén said that they feel excited about their new 5 years agreement and their innovation and expertise will benefit all the subscribers in the UK.
