These days, wireless networking has picked up with such an incredible speed that almost every organization is running on it. Wireless technology runs on a radio frequency standard 802.11b & g and is handled by the Wireless Zero Configuration service which detects any available wireless network within range and act as a supplicant in authenticating and subscribing a computer to either join a peer to peer (ad-hoc) or access point (infrastructure) service provider. If required you can switch between available wireless networks as you move between cities. All you need is a wireless network adapter which you can get anywhere in the market. If you are on a wireless laptop or desktop and would like to learn at least the basic troubleshooting this article describes it below. Troubleshooting
- Make sure the wireless adapter is supported in windows XP. You can get latest driver information either from the vendor or from an online download location.
- How to verify if the driver is good or bad? If its Windows XP compatible then follow the steps below:
- Click Start button followed by Run, and type control.exe in the Open box.
- Click Network and Internet Connections icon and Select Network Connections. Right-click your Wireless Connection icon, and then select Properties to open the available options.
- For some reason if you don't see the Wireless Network Connection icon in the Network Connections folder or you are unable to view the properties, there is a problem. And it can be with the device driver for the wireless network adapter.
- If the properties for the wireless connection appear but Wireless Networks Tab is missing, that means the driver is not supported by your windows XP.
- Similarly, if the Authentication Tab is missing, use step 2a and type services.msc in the dialogue box and make sure the Wireless Zero Configuration service is running.
How to correct the driver issues Even after installing the wireless network adapter device drivers if the wireless doesn't seems to respond well then look for the setting mentioned below:
- Click the Start button followed by Run, and type devmgmt.msc in the Open box.
- In Computer Management, click on Device Manager in left pane.
- In the right details pane, double-click on Other Devices and look for the unknown wireless network adapter with a yellow question icon.
- If it's found under other device, this means windows were unable to find a suitable driver for this device.
- To resolve this issue, contact your device manufacturer and obtain the latest drivers. Re-install them and repeat step no 3 again.
- If the unknown wireless adapter in not located in the Other Devices folder, switch over to Network Adapters folder.
- If you have successfully located the wireless network adapter, check its properties and write down the make and the model of the adapter.
- In the properties, under Device status, check and verify this message: "The device is working correctly."
If the wireless broadband network adapter is not listed under Network Connections folder, the problem lies either with the hardware device or the drivers. Call the seller store and get another device.
