How to Buy a Broadband Router

Broadband internet routers enable the users to share a single broadband connection among many computers. Generally, the broadband routers are used in smaller set ups such as homes or small offices. They are also called residential or home gateways. These routers predominantly support DSL or cable internet connections.

Additional functions carried out by routers include identifying the optimal path for a data packet via NAT (Network Address Translation), restricting hostile viruses and other software from accessing the network, and at times replacing switches and hubs needed to connect the hosts within an internet network.

File sharing and home LAN based gaming are also allowed by routers. Today, the user can find many different types of routers for wired and wireless networks at the market. This means purchasing a broadband router can be confusing with the numerous options in the market.

While going for a broadband router, it is ideal for the user to purchase it from the user’s broadband provider. If the user requires a high-end multi-feature router, he may benefit by leasing it initially. The vital benefit of leasing or purchasing a router form the user’s ISP is that one does not have to worry about broadband connection compatibility.

The user needs to determine the number of devices in the network for which a broadband router is required, besides determining the type and number of required ports. A note of the type of broadband connection – DSL or cable – should be made, because routers for DSL modem are different from routers used for cable connection. There are certain routers that work with both.

While buying a broadband router, the user must pay special attention to power requirement. If the consumer has a higher workload to manage, high power broadband routers would be required.
