Fresh Law contemplated by Ministers to realise Broadband for all

New UK Law for Rural Broadband BoostA leading news portal published from the United Kingdom has reported that a fresh legislation was being contemplated by the government of the United Kingdom to revive the ‘broadband for all’ proposal made by the former communications minister Lord Stephen Carter. This would be largely on the moral grounds that every household in the country had a legal right to a reasonably fast broadband internet connection.

The fresh proposals would consider access to high speed broadband internet on a par with some of the utility services such as water and gas. As a matter of fact, utilities like gas and water have already been covered by a law guaranteeing their supply to all households in the United Kingdom. It has been further reported that the council leader considered the legal broadband internet obligation in response to the remote communities’ concerns of being left behind in the digital revolution.

It is also obvious that under the lately proposed super-fast next generation fibre optic broadband rollout by the government, which only tend to cover 40 per cent of the country as an initial move. Furthermore, this proposal would also largely leave behind the businesses and homes in much of the rural areas forced to swallow slow internet connections.

It is also worth mentioning here the view of the local authorities that the UK government’s commitment to provide a broadband internet connection to every household in the country by 2012, marked by a minimum speed of 2Mbps was quite insufficient. As a matter of fact, they were persistently demanding faster minimum access speeds to be ensured by a legislation.

The latest proposals, if accepted by the communities secretary, John Denham and local government as well as the business, innovation and technology ministers, the UK would become one of the first nations in the world to oblige broadband providers to provide fast broadband. Incidentally, Finland has already passed a legislation ensuring 1Mbps broadband connections to every one in the country, in 2009 October.
