Broadband Miracle – Ericsson’s 500Mbps Copper Wire
Nothing less than a miracle has been staged by Ericsson last day, as it conducted the first live Vectoral VDSL2 demonstration of the world. VDSL2 stands for Very High Bitrate Digital Subscriber line technology. This is one technology that can boost the broadband speeds up to 500Mb over copper lines. In fact, Ericsson had demonstrated a twisted pair of existing copper cables pushing the broadband speeds of up to 500Mbps.
This development would definitely bring joy in the face of Ofcom, for it can now press the big names in the UK ISP that is planning to charge an exorbitant amount against accessing their lines, to reconsider the prices. The upcoming of this technology is expected to enable the ISPs to blend it with fibre-optic technology to help it reach homes without shedding speeds.
The current circumstances bode well for BT and Virgin Media as they are the chosen ISPs to carry on with experiments for superfast broadband by means of optic-fibre technology. Ericsson claims that the new developments would enable the users to gain faster access to the novel broadband services like HDTV and video-on-demand.
Incidentally, Vodafone early this week had chosen Ericsson as their partner who would provide them operations and maintenance for its 3G as well as 2G radio networks in Britain. As a matter of fact, the deal is a seven year one, by which Ericsson is not only expected to boost the cost structure and quality of the networks, but also would transport to Vodafone, around 350 employees.
No wonder Vodafone is also on cloud nine these days that is quiet apparent in the words of Jeni Mundy who is their chief technology officer for the UK. She said that Ericsson being the specialists in this segment would prove to be critical in realisation of the Vodafone customers’ expectations of a high quality network.
