Edinburgh and Glasgow to Relish Superfast Broadband By 2010
According to BT’s plans, a number of around 34,000 customers would be served initially the fibre optic connections linking street side cabinets with the exchanges. More, it would be a reason for celebrations for the customers of Glasgow and Edinburgh, for BT is planning to start the roll-out by providing the initial connections to thousands of users residing in the two cities.
The most significant aspect here is that the service is expected to offer download speeds of 40Mbps that is ten times swifter than the existing broadband connections. These are speeds that would enable home users to watch high-definition movies, apart from playing advanced online games.
BT’s plans to ensure super-fast broadband access to 40 percent of the UK homes by the year 2012, investing GBP 1.5 billions was given a clean chit by Ofcom, the telecom regulator of the UK. As a preliminary step, BT will be availing the service to 30, 000 properties in the Hillington Park centre for innovation and through exchanges in the vicinity of Glasgow university.
It is also expected that in Edinburgh, around 4,000 customers in the New Town and Stockbridge would be given access. The SCDI (Scottish Council for Development and Industry), has optimistically stated that the new development would put forth a significant tool for boosting productivity.
Meanwhile, BT Openreach’s Steve Robinson has disclosed that procedure of availing the service to the rival internet service providers of the UK, would hopefully lead to competitive pricing. He also said that the roll-out of the service would be playing a significant role in molding the future of the UK, as a knowledge-based conomy.
