Report on internet usage by office employees

The business firm, CBI, published a report on the personal use of internet by office workers in the UK. The research conducted on more than 500 organisations in the UK shows that an office employee surfs the internet for more than 90 minutes a week on average and the internet usage of the workers (estimated to be around 1 million) contribute £10.6bn a year to the UK economy.

The report shows that the employees use broadband internet for their personal use, especially for browsing P2P networking sites, emailing, online shopping etc. As they spend more than a hour and a half week for surfing, it accounts for loss of 4.4% of working time, according to the report.

It was found that nearly five percent of working hours was lost to internet browsing in the SMEs that have employees less than 500 employees. However, the larger organizations were reported to have handled this issue more effectively by installing systems that monitor the internet usage by their employees. About 32 % percent of employers had to warn an employee for misuse of internet while 13 percent of the firms needed to sack an employee for misuse of internet during last year.
