It has been reported that the advertising regulator of the United Kingdom, Advertising Standards Authority, better known as ASA, has upheld a complaint forwarded by broadband provider Sky against an allegedly misleading advert by TalkTalk.

The concerned advertisement made by TalkTalk, one of the leading providers of broadband and home phone bundles in the United Kingdom, has been reportedly banned by the advertising watchdog from airing in the United Kingdom.

The penalised advertisement was seen claiming that users could cut their broadband internet bills to a nominal GBP 6.49 a month. The voice-over the advert did not clarify the fact that separate charges would be taxed for calls made between morning 6 and evening 6, although some clarifications were made by the on-screen text.

On the other hand, TalkTalk forwarded the argument that the advertisement seldom tend to mislead as it affirmed that only the inclusive elements came under the fixed-price while the the non-inclusive elements were to be billed separately.

However, it was stated by the advertising regulator of the country that they considered that the viewers of the ad were likely to predominantly interpret the reference in the ad’s voice-over to ‘your bill’ as a cut in their overall broadband-phone bill rather than simply the inclusive call price.

Virgin Media’s and BSkyB’s criticism of Project Canvas, the controversial video-on-demand service, has been dismissed with disdain by TalkTalk’s chairman Charles Dunstone. TalkTalk, one of the leading broadband home phone bundle providers of the United Kingdom is a partner of Project Canvas.

Nevertheless, Dunstone does expect to come across further scrutiny before the final go-ahead green signal is shown to the joint venture backed by BBC. He also admitted popping up of arguments while discussing strategic direction of the project that were eventually laid to rest. It is also significant that on Wednesday, the Office of Fair Trading had cleared Project Canvas of breaching regulation of competition regarding mergers.

On the other hand, one of the leading broadband, TV and phone provider of the United Kingdom, BSkyB has put forward the argument that the project tend to give its rival companies an unfair advantage in the nascent VoD market of the United Kingdom, particularly for the support it enjoyed from the BBC that was funded by the licence fee.

Meanwhile, the argument of Virgin Media is that in spite of the provider’s protestations against contrary, the project that would bring video-on-demand content to the viewers of TV with Freesat and Freeview receivers was a closed unfair platform.

Dunstone that downplayed the criticism of the two leading broadband providers operating in the United Kingdom, said that he did find it hard to conceive the criticism from the part of Virgin Media and BSkyB, despite being a quite fair individual that always promoted competition.

Dunstone went on to claim that Project Canvas was an absolutely open platform that invited anyone to join it and what was happening around was the unbundling of television as historically, the company or the person that controlled the delivery mechanism has had the content attached to it/him.

It has been reported that the final hurdle in their lengthy process of demerger, has been cleared by the prominent broadband home phone bundle provider in the United Kingdom, TalkTalk and its parent firm Carphone Warehouse.

The final hurdle here refers to the broadband provider’s obtaining a formal legal approval for the demerger from the England and Wales High Court of Justice. The approval was given earlier last week.

The new trade title given to TalkTalk will be TalkTalk Telecom Group, although it would hardly become effective until the re-opening of stock markets on Monday morning. Nevertheless, the demerger will become technically effective from Friday evening.

The post demerger scenario will see TTG having sole responsibility for the total telecoms and broadband internet providing businesses under the firm’s banner. This will include Pipex, Nildram, Opal, ex-Tiscali subscribers and Freedom2Surf operations.

It is expected that the new division would maintain some relations with Carphone Warehouse, which would allow it to offer fresh triple play (broadband, home phone and mobile broadband) bundles besides launching a mobile phone product.

TalkTalk, also revealed that it planned to launch a broadband TV service (IPTV) as well that would be launched based on the upcoming Project Canvas.

The leading broadband and home phone bundle provider operating in the United Kingdom, TalkTalk has outlined fresh plans to cut the congestion on its broadband internet network.

As a matter of fact, recent reports say that the popular home broadband provider has been investing seriously in the context.

The broadband provider revealed that its engineers were toiling on upgrades worth up to GBP 20 million currently with a view to enhance the provider’s backhaul network, while it has in the past, already spent GBP 500 million on its broadband network.

The product management director at TalkTalk, Alex Hollingdale wrote in the company blog that they were maintaining high expectations over the fresh move that it would enable the customers to surf the internet at the fastest available connection speeds.

Hollingdale added that they, in effect had developed the equivalent of the M1 Motorway using their current thousand eight hundred exchanges across Britain, all the way to internet.

Hollingdale concluded claiming that the largest broadband internet network in the UK alternative to the one deployed by BT was getting better.
