The controversial broadband internet spyware company, Phorm has waged a dubious fightback after its potential contracts with broadband providers TalkTalk and BT had ended in a dramatic plunge in losses.

Phorm had experienced pre-tax losses in the business prior to their investments in the development and marketing of Webwise Discover-like products. Nevertheless, the pre-tax losses of the company for the first half of the year has fallen from $24.7 million to $15 million, since then.

Phorm had shot into spotlight for its developing software that holds the information regarding the websites viewed by the consumers of the internet. The company had also proposed to use these details to target those users with specific advertising.

Incidetally, this dubious software had raked great criticism from different corners of the internet society in the United Kingdom, on the grounds that it would erode the privacy of the internet consumers. Despite attracting a great lot of criticism, the company held on to its view that the software was all about anonymity, besides providing the internet users with regular chances to turn it off.

The final and the most lethal blow to the company was effected by TalkTalk and BT, as they declined to accept the software, going back on a previous understanding with Phorm.

The controversial online advertising company, Phorm has recently denied a report that the UK ISP Virgin Media and BT were contemplating on getting detatched from the system. Those who are late on Phorm, it is a company that works with the broadband services provider of the UK to monitor the internet-based behavioral patterns of the users to put the collected data to use in targeted advertising campaigns.

The relevant report was published in NMA (New Media Age). It stated that one of the few companies that regarded Phorm’s technology as reasonable, Virgin Media had made a U turn in their perspective and was at present pursuing alternatives. The mentioning of ‘a BT source’ in the article also helped in spreading speculations that BT could also distance itself from the Phorm system.

However, Phorm has responded instantly with the statement that there was no essence in New Media Age’s story, as continuous attempts like the present one have been going on over the last year to create the illusion that ISP partners of Phorm were parting ways with them. He added that such stories had, as a matter of fact, no basis.

Incidentally, numerous major online websites, including Wikipedia, Amazon and LiveJournal have among others, opted out from the system recently. This says that Phorm now, is not allowed to access their websites to monitor the users behaviour to be profiled by the system. The European Union had also earlier expanded its DPI (Deep Packet Technology) investigation over Phorm as well.

Meanwhile, in another interesting turn out, Virgin Media has come up with a disclaimer against the NMA report that there was no truth to NMA’s report. They added that however, they had been conducting discussions on the scopes of refining the system. On the other hand BT that has been one of the strongest advocates of Phorm, chose not to comment on the issue in the circumstance.

A much important turn out that happened in the internet segment of the UK, was the refusal of online retail magnate, Amazonto allow Phorm to gather data from their British websites. This move from the online retail giant immediately follows the European Commission’s declaration that it was contemplating on legal procedures against the UK on the Phorm issue.

It is not at all a secret that so far the controversial company, Phorm had been operating with the blessings of the UK authorities. This company served advertisements to web users based on the data regarding their online routines, gained from the relevant internet service providers in the UK. The UK broadband providers who hold access to all the web activities of a customer, ranging from noncommercial site visits to queries at search engines tipped Phorm with the data, which was cleverly used by the controversial ad firm to boost their profile.

The behavioral advertisement companies of the older times, used to follow a more straight forward procedure of gathering the required information from the pertinent websites within a network. To add to this, Phorm was also found conducting clandestine tests of its platform in the years 2006 and 2007 that many consider as violation of European privacy laws. Privacy advocates had then strongly condemned the activities of Phorm then, even in the UK.

Apart from infringing the privacy of the individuals, Phorm’s activities also put the business interests of many online retail sites at stake. To be more precise, presently at the instance of one visiting the Amazon website, only Amazon has access to sensing this, apart from the ISP that provides service. The last thing that Amazon would want here is this information being passed to a third party. Imagine Canon gaining this information to approach the customer directly.

Besides all these, a fresh feature developed to make the internet increasingly relevant as well as safer to the users, called Webwise was also created by Phorm. This feature is availed to the participating ISP partner users for free, apart from including in it augmented protection against fraud along with relevant advertising features.
