Informa, a mobile broadband industry analyzing agency has come forward with a finding that the mobile broadband providers operating in the United Kingdom could deploy the HSPA+ mobile broadband technology to effectively ease the pressure on their networks.

Nevertheless, the deployment of the HSPA+ technology in the country, according to the research agency, is only an interim step until the rollout of the superfast next generation LTE (Long Term Evolution) mobile broadband network rollout. The LTE is expected to deliver without bottlenecks, mobile broadband speeds of up to 150Mbps. At present the prominent mobile broadband platform is HSPA.

The research agency further claimed that the mobile broadband serviceproviders in the UK were feeling the load of an increased user-base. It estimates that the traffic of mobile data users can increase by up to twenty five fold by the year 2012.

According to the spokesperson of Informa, Dimitris Mavarkis, the mobile broadband operators in the developed markets in the United States of America and the United Kingdom were beginning to saturate, which was evident in the fact that numerous bottlenecks were found in data-centric regions such as New York and London.

Mavarkis also boded that LTE, which was the next generation technology of mobile broadband would ease the strain on the networks.

A broadband expert in the United Kingdom has laid out his presentiment that both LTE (Long Term Evolution) and WiMAX mobile broadband technologies had crucial roles to play in the future of broadband internet services in the United Kingdom.

This was revealed by the mobile communications company Motorola’s European sales vice-president, Steve McCaffrey. According to his claims, both the mobile broadband technology platforms had a robust future, as they would be needed to correct access problems where superfast fibre broadband could not be provided to particular businesses and homes.

He had stated this while talking to the technology-based website, Silicon Republic.com. As a matter of fact, he had commented that Motorola alone was contracted to deploy numerous WiMAX base-stations in the near future. He added that significant bandwidth would be demanded by the future’s broadband-based applications.

McCaffrey concluded saying that the Millenials, the digital natives of the present that at all times lived online, on the move or at home through the latest wireless gadgets, had a gargantuan appetite for applications and broadband.

O2, the popular mobile broadband provider operating in the United Kingdom had only earlier this month, announced its plans to trial in the country from the beginning of next year, Long Term Evolution mobile broadband technology.

The renowned technology and mobile company Sony Ericsson opined that the United Kingdom might not see the Fourth Generation mobile broadband technology until 2012 at the earliest. The mobile phone giant sounded the warning when talking to PCPro on the LTE rollout. Many countries across the world are already working on the deployment of the LTE technology, which arguably called in other words, the 4G technology.

Ericsson puts worth the ongoing dispute over the 900MHz radio spectrum as the reason for the delay in the LTE rollout that is expected to hit the UK. The 900MHz spectrum is currently owned by O2 and Vodafone, and is understood that at least an year will be required for the government to effectuate a redistribution. This fact has been cited by Ericsson as the reason for its difficulty in availing the technology for another three years.

The deployment of the technology over the existing infrastructure, according to the mobile phone and technology firm, would only help in delivering one fourth of the 150 Mbps maximum theoretical speed credited to the technology. However, the technology can still provide a speed of up to ten times the 3.6 Mbps speed provided by existing mobile broadband technology.

The spread of the news has invited widespread criticism from different sectors of the country. Many people are of the viewpoint that it was a shame that the country was falling behind in the rollout of the 4G technology, as China and USA were rolling out services relevant to this technology by the end of this year.

Last week, Lord Stephen Carter, the communication and technology minister of the UK had paid a visit to the Swindon technology research laboratory of Motorola UK. He obviously must have had a deep look into the firm’s testing facility, to come into a conclusion on the progress, as well as the scope of the LTE network undertaken by the mobile phone giant.

Lord Carter’s purpose of the visit to the research laboratory of Motorola is very much apparent from the government’s statement that the UK’s securing a place in the global innovation’s forefront, as well as turning out a vanguard in terms of quality and investment in communication and technology segment, largely depends on the new LTE technology.

The government figures state that about 20 percent of the users engage mobile devices to get connected to the internet. This number can never come down; rather is likely to grow with improvement in the relevant technologies. The government also expects the LTE technology to start yielding prolifically from 2010 or at the most, from early 2011.

It is also worth pondering over the words of Lord Carter that the government’s proposal in the Digital Britain interim report of a universal broadband service that can be realised by a combination of wired and wireless and fixed and mobile networks are still very much live.

He also praised the attempts of Motorola by stating that their researches at Swindon were not only significant in terms of innovation, inward investment as well as development of service, but also displayed the capability to extend a vital step towards broadband coverage stretching to Britain’s remotest areas.

Moreover, once when asked about the danger of monopoly in the superfast broadband segment posed by BT broadband UK, after its winning the government’s nod to go ahead with its price fixations for its rivals as well, in terms of accessing its fibre optic lines due for functioning in 2012, Ofcom had stressed on its great expectations over mobile broadband technology to counter the Fibre monopoly.

The latest news that has literally rocked the UK broadband service is Telefonica’s unveiling an array of LTE based mobile broadband services, with a view to demonstrate the actual business advantages that can be delivered by such highly potential bandwidth networks.

The Madrid demonstration staged by the owner of O2 Broadband in Britain, the Spanish incumbent Telco, had witnessed the revealing of the key objectives of Telefonica, one among which pointed towards their commitment to technological innovation and leadership.

Telefonica, here has a great advantage of having a potential partner in Ericsson. The pair had successfully demonstrated an LTE mini network based video call and VoIP call. Other demos included image and data download and a video conference.

In the broadband comparison, Telefonica claimed that above 140Mbps speeds were achieved by the network, which was ten times quicker than the present optimal speed offered by HSPA based 3G network.

Besides, Telefonica also revealed that in the demonstration, a prototype LTE network was connected to the existing 2G and 3G networks, which indicated that the application was very much around the corner. However, many have already criticized the hype over the technology on the basis of its roll out obscurity.

Although, twenty six vendors have confirmed that LTE services would be rolled out by them from 2010 to 2012, till this date no domestic UK internet service provider has announced an LTE services launch in the UK.
