According to reports, the co-founder of Lastminute.com has been exhorting partner firms to engage themselves with a fresh campaign lead by her dubbed Race Online 2012. This campaign has been launched with a view to provide access to the UK broadband population within a couple of years.

However, Lane Fox was informed a couple of weeks back that plans for digital public service body tasked with enticing more public services to the internet she was supposed to head was being shelved. Nonetheless, it is understood that her role as the digital inclusion champion is safe.

Meanwhile, a spokesperson of the cabinet office said on the development that the cbinet office was still quite actively leading the operations within the government with an aim to drive ahead more efficient government internet services, digital engagement and transparency, backing Martha Lane Fox in her role as the digital inclusion champion of the UK.

As a matter of fact, Race Online has been supported by GBP 1.5 million of government funding; however, Lane Fox looks ahead to harnessing of the potentials of partner organisations to find a solution for the issue. When observed more closely it was found that due to the advent of 3G broadband a good number of small firms have taken to mobile broadband as well.

According to fresh reports, the money earmarked for funding the digital switchover in the United Kingdom could be injected into the fund for rolling out the next generation broadband internet service across the United Kingdom.

The refreshing part of this information is that if realised, the move could help significantly in the effective rollout of the next generation super-fast broadband internet rollout particularly across the disadvantaged areas of Britain.

This proposal, which was highlighted in the Conservative-Liberal Democrat coalition manifesto, formed part of the commitment of the government to make sure that high-speed broadband internet network was rapidly rolled out across the country.

The new plan is understood to be replacing the the scrapped Labour broadband tax of 50p a month on every fixed phone line in the country.

The amount raised from this fixed-line tax was proposed to fund the next-generation broadband network rollout in the rural and remote areas of the country, where broadband UK providers hardly felt that investment was commercially viable.

This proposal from the Conservatives failed at the end hours of the last Government, during the wash-up period, despite enjoying the support of the Liberal Democrats. The debacle of the proposal largely was due to its unpopularity with the Tories.

Although, the organisations across the country warmly welcomed the fresh proposal they were also quick to comment that still the roll-out would be funded by the general public.

The FSB (Federation of Small Businesses) has called on the newly appointed UK minister for Digital Britain, Ed Vaizey to make basic broadband internet access speeds a universal obligation to support small businesses in their growth and effective economic recovery.

The organisation also wanted the broadband internet customers of the country to be able to cancel their broadband deals if the service meted out to them did not meet the standards specified in the contracts relevant to their service, without having to pay penalty amounts.

Meanwhile, a research carried out by FSB showed that while almost 33 per cent of the small businesses were offered connection speeds between 2Mbps and 4Mbps, about 94 per cent complained feeling that the offerings of their ISPs fell considerably short of the claimed speeds.

On the other hand, a good number of small businesses, particularly in the remote areas of the country seldom enjoyed access to reliable and fast broadband service, according to the research findings. It added that due to this these firms were trading insufficiently.

Whatsoever, the FSB said while welcoming the appointment of Ed Vaizey as the broadband UK minister that it was pleased watching the government recognising the significance of countering the issue of lack of broadband in the rural areas, and urged the minister to fix this as soon as possible.

John Walker, the chairman of the FSB said that the lack of broadband service was unacceptable particularly in the 21st century. He added that the United Kingdom was trailing, as a result of which around 4.8 million small firms of the United Kingdom were failing in developing their business online.

Although, anyone that knows something about the digital future of the UK context would not think twice to welcome the appointment of Ed Vaizey as the minister for Digital Britain, there is also widespread criticism that the post has been kept under the department of culture instead of under the business department.

As a matter of fact, the appointment of Vaizey as the minister holding the responsibility for rolling out broadband internet network across the United Kingdom and implementing in the country, the Digital Economy Act, makes him report to the culture secretary Jeremy Hunt.

Nevertheless, Vaizey, a Parliamentary Under Secretary of State would operate with in both BIS (Business, Innovation and Skills Department) and the DCOMS (Department for Culture, Olympics, Sport and Media).

Although, it was widely perceived that Vaizey was the most likely candidate to assume the post, there were also speculation that the job might just go to MP John Penrose. Nonetheless, the final whistle – although reporting to Culture Department – went in favour of Vaizey and his admirers.

It is also perceived that the position of the new digital minister may have been determined by the interest levels in the Digital Economy Act’s copyright part that includes sections to punish illegal downloaders and their broadband providers.

It is also interesting to see a major chunk of the opposition of the Liberal Democrats towards these provisions in the Act that would prove to be a necessary measure to safeguard the interests of the media and creative industries of the United Kingdom, evaporated after the general election. Presumably, as a result of the coalition.

The minister has attacked the fresh proposal of a nation-wide 100Mbps broadband rollout put forth by the Conservative Party describing it as a hopeless plan lacking funding.

Timms stated while commenting on the social micro blogging website Twitter that the broadband internet policy of the Conservative Party was hopeless. He added that minor regulatory tweaks in hand already was not the answer, as an immediate funding was the need of the hour.

It is also worth noting here that Francis Maude, the shadow cabinet office secretary had spoken last day his view that the Tories would be aiming at making the government of the UK, world’s most technology-friendly one, provided they won the upcoming election.

Maude further stated that for a long time they have been enduring a closed store government that used to keep information from the people, failed in stimulating innovative industries and wasted money on IT products that were gold-plated to cover their bloat and unnecessary existence.
