The broadband school concept of Virgin Media is simple as well as naïve. They expect that the more people understood the technical terms pertaining to broadband internet segment; more were the chances that these people would try the broadband services and products of the ISP. There is also another dimension for this aspect, where although people are familiar with common terms like broadband, few really understood the concept to provide a reasonable explanation.

As for the study results, a total number of three thousand internet using people were subjected, of which a considerable lot struggled with speed rates, security issues and technical jargon. The study conducted by Virgin Media also revealed that 18 percent of the surveyed lot did not know what the term broadband meant. 45 percent were surprised hearing the term dongle. 40 percent thought ADSL is a Greek term. Finally, 7 percent had assumed that Blu-ray is yet another broadband type.

Virgin Media also revealed that above 50 percent of the total lot though broadband was all about a landline, and the terms mobile broadband and fibre optic lines were not known to them. Something incredible however was the fact that despite the roaring success of BBC iPlayer, only 18 percent knew something sensible about the term IPTV. Virgin Media, driven by the outcome of the study plans to start broadband schools in Birmingham, Leeds, London, Belfast and New Castle initially, as they considered these as the most struggling areas with broadband literacy.
