Government had in 2007 established an executive NDPB (non-departmental public body) in the form of TSB (Technology Strategy Board), where it had invested, over a dozen ultra-fast 1 and 10Gbps broadband research projects, GBP 1,000,000. This was financed by the DIUS (Department of Innovation, Universities and Skills). Each one of the twelve projects, costed between GBP 30,000 and GBP 100,000, is expected to realize the establishment of European collaborations by forming the part of massive EU financed research projects.

It is also believed that the collaboration would result in the development of an ultra-fast broadband technology, which materializes a pan-European broadband network, referring to ultra fast data transfer. Such cutting edge technologies can apparently help the broadbandand mobile communication companies of the European Union gain a competitive advantage on the global platform. However, many broadband experts all over the world are of the opinion that TSB should be predominantly concentrating on the scopes of utilizing the existing optic fibre cables as well as networks to roll out future services.

It is also interesting to listen to the words of TSB’s lead technologist, Mike Biddle that stresses on the mergence of the fibre optic networks all over Europe to bring about a considerable change in the operational mode of businesses, hence providing a major competitive edge to the European companies. Again, there are also issues such as the capability of the internet itself to cope with the new bandwidth, although one can be at ease thinking that a home connection touting the speeds of up to 1Gbps is nowhere round the corner.
