BT to provide Wifi service to sailing community

According to the Guardian report, BT has made another acquisition to expand its network, this time, to provide wifi service to yachts that are on the sea. Square Mile Marina network owned by Dominic Kilinger was ridden with financial problems for sometime and its chief Klinger has made a plead on a TV show to the investors to provide the capital to sustain the business and eventually, Peter Jones, the major retailer came with £150,000 to pull the firm out of its financial woes.

Now, BT’s acquisition of Square Mile Marina will help the firm to be rebuilt with the support by its wing, BT Openzone. The coming sailing season in March will further boost the business growth of the wifi network firm which will provide wifi access to 3000 berth holders and visiting boats.

Chris Bruce of BT Openzone feels this development will help BT to expand its broadband network along seacoast. He further commented:

"BT has a strong affiliation with the sailing community through our support of Dame Ellen McArthur and the BT Global Challenge.
“As an extension of this commitment, BT is very excited about the opportunity to offer Wi-Fi services to the sailing community and we will be looking to expand this network in 2008."

It should be noted that BT has signed with FON, the Argentinean wireless broadband provider last year to setup a worldwide wifi community by giving wifi access to their customers to use their wifi hotspots in and outside of UK.

Wifi service has become an important part of ISPs nowadays. To access public wifi hotspots, you need a laptop or mobile enabled with wifi along with a subscription to some wifi service available in UK. Orange has also issued wifi vouchers which their customers can use to access the wifi hotspots of its partner The Cloud in UK.
