BT slashes TV Channel-access Price
BT, the prominent fixed-line broadband provider operating in the United Kingdom seems set to trigger off a price war with its rival TV service providers over the top TV sporting occasions, through a move that could cut the prices of cricket and football viewing.
The British media and communications giant has indicated that it was prepared to provide its customers in the region with Sky Sports 1 at a reduced price of GBP 15 per month, which is around GBP 10 lesser than the tariff offered by its main rivals over the same channel.
Meanwhile, BT Retail’s chief executive officer, Gavin Patterson had said in an internview given to the Sunday Telegraph that the case was clear as crystal that the customers benefited from more choice offered.
It is also worth mentioning here that in March, this year, it is expected that Ofcom, the telecommunications regulator in the UK would publish its decision on the context after the completion of a probe into Pay TV.
It is widely perceived that Ofcom would ask UK ISP and TV provider Sky to slash the price it charged its rivals currently for accessing channels such as Sky Movies and Sky Sports. The regulator is believed to come up with an update on the probe this week.
It is much expected that a positive move from Ofcom could open the floodgates for BT and Virgin Media to pass on the price slash to provide their customers access to premium channels at a reduced price.
