BT is to offer free customer support

Many ISPs charge the calls made to their customer support while a few of them offer free 0800 numbers. Following the suit of the small section of ISPs, BT has also announced that its customers can make free calls using 0800 numbers from the first week of April. Currently, BT Broadband customers also use 0845or 0870 numbers to call their technical support which usually contribute a fair amount to their monthly cost.

Gavin Patterson of BT said:
“BT has been setting the pace with its pricing and today we’ve decided to go a step further. We’ve always had some of the lowest prices for such calls and now we’ve decided to make them free. We call on the rest of the industry to follow our lead. There really is no excuse for companies whose prices are either sky-high or verging on the ridiculous. We believe that customers are out of pocket to the tune of £70 million a year.”

Earlier, BT announced a hike of 75p to its line rental which makes it £11.75 now, while there is an increase of 50p to £1.25 for paperless billing. The new prices will be effective from 1st April 2008.

After the changes come into effect, 99 percent of BT customers can make free calls to the customer support, which will be an 8 percent increase from the current figures.
