Broadband Tax to be Scrapped

Broadband Tax To Be Scrapped If Conservatives Win PowerIn a recent development that can also be called interesting, the Tories have revealed that they would scrap the Labour’s proposed broadband tax on the phone lines in the United Kingdom, if they win power at the upcoming general elections. As a matter of fact, the Labour government has proposed a 50p monthly broadband levy with a view to fund the rollout of the next generation fibre broadband across the country.

This sensational news was revealed for the Conservative Party by MP Jeremy Hunt who is also their shadow culture secretary. Hunt has disclosed that his party was planning to abolish as fast as possible, the Labour government’s plans for the GBP 6 annual levy on every fixed telephone line, if it emerged victorious at the general elections.

The popular newspaper in the UK, the Finance Times has quoted Hunt as claiming that the party would also be scrapping proposals for letting the television license to be shared with broadcasters other than BBC.

It is apparent from the body language of the Labour government that they are determined to have the tax plans in place before the general elections. This is where the Tories have provided the anti-levy campaigners a breather by promising that anything of the kind would be amended by them with immediate effect, providing they win power.

The shadow culture secretary’s comments hold more news value as it follow the appeal made by Royal Academy of Engineering to the government to hike the proposed minimum universal broadband speed of 2Mbps to 4Mbps.
