All children to get internet access at home
While the government is taking initiative to launch broadband campaign for schools, the research carried out by the UK broadband provider, TalkTalk has revealed that nearly three-fourths of parents think that the internet plays an important role in the curricular development of their children. The school intranet and the internet accessibility at homes allow them to visit sites of educational importance to get more information on their subjects.
The government is already in talks with some of the ISPs to provide cheap broadband packages for the children who do not have internet access at homes. The ‘online reporting’ will help the parents to get update on the progress of their children in school by connecting to the school intranet.
The research says that more than half of the parents (64%) felt that the government should be responsible for providing internet access for all children at home. Currently, nearly 40 percent of households in UK are yet to have internet and this section of people think that broadband has not become affordable and a few families use dialup or PAYG broadband or dialup as they do not spend much time online.
David Thatcher of TalkTalk broadband provider said:
“Our research suggests that parents and children are already in agreement about the importance of broadband in their education.”
Regarding the possible uses of internet in schools, Hendrik Ball of BBC told:
“Broadband lets us deliver video as well as the usual web content such as audio, text and graphics, and that’s excitingâ€.
