5 Quick Tips to Secure your Wireless Network

Wireless networks are convenient, but they can be insecure if not maintained properly. Wireless lounges allow internet access to anyone. Many default settings on wireless routers allow for anyone to access your network as long as he ore she are in your range. Here are some quick tips to make your wireless network secure. 1.Change your networks SSID - By default many routers come with generic names such as "Wireless Internet" . Change this to a unique name that does not include your address. 2.Change your admin password - Many wireless routers come with control panels that can be accessed by going to an IP address. Change your admin password to a difficult to guess password. Leaving the default puts your network at risk by allowing an unwanted guest to go in and change your router settings. 3.Use a Security Protocol - Depending on your wireless router you may be able to use WPA, WPA2, or WEP security protocols. These protocols generate unique or user defined keys to protect your wireless network. Any user who tries to access your network will need to enter this key. Although this puts another line of defense between your router and a hacker, these keys can sometimes be cracked. Changing these keys often makes it harder for a hacker to get in to your network. 4.Limit MAC addresses - Most routers allow you to limit who can connect by MAC address. Every network adapter has a unique MAC address which it uses to connect to wireless networks. If you limit the MAC addresses, you will need to enter each MAC address you will allow to connect to your network. These addresses can usually be found on the adapter or on the bottom or side of your computer. 5.Install Firewalls - Install firewalls on any computer that accesses the internet. Installing a firewall limits access to your computer and will block most inbound attacks. There are many free and paid firewalls available. Once you have installed a firewall, be sure to update it. Most firewalls offer an automatic update system. These updates continually protect you against the latest threats.
